The study, which surveyed 835 households in Germany, highlights issues such as bureaucracy, legal apprehensions, and technical challenges that are hindering even the most eager consumers from making the switch to solar power.
The Eager Interest in Solar Power
Despite the existing hurdles, 76% of surveyed households that do not currently use solar systems expressed a strong interest in adopting this energy source. However, a closer look reveals that misconceptions about regulations and the complexities surrounding installation processes are stifling their intent. Approximately 29% of renters are uncertain about their installation rights, leading to decision paralysis. Furthermore, 27% of respondents feel overwhelmed by the existing regulations and paperwork involved, while 22% find the installation process too intricate.
This disconnect between interest and action represents a growing paradox, particularly among renters and those less technologically savvy. The report indicates that although many consumers are keen to explore solar energy—17% of non-homeowners have conducted thorough research on available systems—most lack the specific guidance necessary to transform their interest into concrete actions.
Perception vs Reality
Legal and practical issues form the crux of the barriers many potential users face. The study found that a significant proportion of respondents are unaware of their rights as tenants regarding solar installations. In fact, nearly a third live in rental properties and are unsure if they can legally install a solar system, amplifying their hesitation. Legal complexities and requirement ambiguities continue to plague nearly 29% of those interested in solar energy, as 27% mentioned that current regulations, permits, and required registrations are unclear. Technical complexity also looms large, discouraging around 22% of consumers from moving forward.
What’s critical to note is that many of these obstacles stem from perception rather than reality. Since 2024, German legislation has explicitly granted tenants the legal right to install plug-in solar systems, raised the feed-in limit to 800 watts, and streamlined registration processes through a single market master data register. Therefore, the real bottleneck is not regulatory—it’s informational. Consumers continue to view solar energy projects as overwhelming technical endeavors, despite the fact that legal processes have become more accessible than ever.
Product Overload and Decision Fatigue
In addition to the legal and technical challenges, choosing from a multitude of product offerings can also pose a significant challenge. An impressive 18% of surveyed consumers reported difficulties in selecting the right product amidst an overwhelming array of options. Many also feel that there is insufficient clear and reliable information available. Consumers frequently struggle to determine which solar system aligns best with their unique home layouts and energy consumption needs while trying to compare various storage capabilities, performance levels, installation methods, and control options.
The Importance of Simplicity
For 53% of current solar users, easy installation and DIY capabilities were key factors influencing their purchasing decisions, surpassing even technological advancements (32%), value for money (31%), customer reviews (28%), or warranty coverage (27%). In terms of design, only 8% considered it a critical factor. Additionally, simplicity proves essential not just at the point of sale but throughout the entire lifecycle of the system: 52% viewed simplicity and reliability as significant qualities, while 33% deemed them indispensable.
As dynamic tariffs become more common, understanding when to store, consume, or feed energy back into the grid introduces a new layer of complexity. Future-ready solutions must ensure that both initial setup and daily energy management are as seamless as possible.
