Expanding Access to VR Therapy in Tennessee
Tennessee is leading the way in innovative healthcare solutions with a landmark decision to enhance access to virtual reality (VR)-based therapy for neurodivergent individuals on Medicaid. The Tennessee Department of Disability & Aging (DDA) announced that they have approved Medicaid reimbursement for services provided by Floreo, a pioneer in VR therapy tailored for individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions.
Who Benefits?
This new initiative particularly targets TennCare-eligible youth and adults who are neurodivergent and need support. As part of the Enabling Technology Program, Floreo’s VR therapy aims to provide immersive, real-world experiences that foster essential life skills. This program is crucial as it allows users to engage in environments they might struggle with in traditional settings. For instance, individuals can practice navigating public transportation, responding in classroom settings, or handling multi-tasking at work, all through safe and interactive VR scenarios.
“Virtual reality isn't merely a device; it represents a groundbreaking therapeutic approach for individuals with neurodivergence,” stated Milton Neuenschwander, the DDA's Enabling Technology Director. He emphasized the state's commitment to ensuring that innovative technologies are accessible to all Tennesseans.
What Services Are Included?
Floreo’s VR platform is now included under several Medicaid Waiver programs. These programs facilitate support for individuals with disabilities and promote caregiver assistance in either home or community settings. Some of the specific programs now incorporating Floreo’s offerings include the 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, the Employment and Community First (ECF) CHOICES, and the CHOICES Long-Term Services and Supports Program.
Tennessee has previously recognized the potential of VR technology through various initiatives by Floreo. The company has been instrumental in creating customized VR curricula focused on practical skills such as public transit navigation and job readiness. Floreo has already made strides as an assistive technology provider within Tennessee's Medicaid initiatives.
A Focus on Inclusion and Empowerment
Vijay Ravindran, the CEO of Floreo, remarked on the significance of Tennessee's investment in innovative technologies. He noted that understanding and embracing enabling technologies reflects the state’s vision for a more equitable care system. The partnership builds upon Floreo’s existing contributions to Tennessee, promising accessible VR therapy on a broader scale, helping more individuals lead independent lives.
Floreo recently achieved an extraordinary milestone as the first VR autism tool to earn the FDA's breakthrough device designation in 2023. Their curriculum is supported by research from renowned institutions, improving therapy outcomes for neurodivergent individuals.
