Jack and Jill of America Enhances Literacy and Community Impact in North Charleston During the 2026 National Youth Trip
Jack and Jill of America’s 2026 National Youth Trip
In April 2026, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, a premier African American family organization, held its biennial National Youth Trip in North Charleston. This event aimed to immerse families in the region's history and cultural heritage, while also creating a lasting impact through community service activities. The trip, themed "A Journey Through History: The Lineage and Heritage of the Lowcountry," allowed Jack and Jill families from various parts of the nation to engage deeply with the local stories, traditions, and historical significance.
As part of this enriching experience, families collaborated with Jenkins Youth Family Village and the Murray Hill Recreation Association to organize a literacy-focused Service Day for children and families in the North Charleston community. Together, they established a permanent community library, distributed over 400 books and literacy resources, and contributed to the Jenkins Free School Summer Program, supporting students in maintaining and enhancing their literacy skills throughout the summer.
Darlene McGhee Whittington, the 28th National President of Jack and Jill of America, emphasized the importance of this year's theme, saying, "This year's theme requires us to listen more closely, understand at a deeper level, and assist our children in realizing that history is not merely something to memorize, but rather something to experience."
Ja'nister Herring, Interim Executive Director of Jenkins Youth Family Village, expressed excitement over the meaningful engagement that occurred during the literacy day, highlighting, "With books and literacy resources being donated to the community, this became a genuinely meaningful and enjoyable Literacy Day for everyone involved."
Local media outlets, including Live 5 News and Let's Talk Podcast, covered the event, showcasing how community engagement can transform lives and empower children through education and accessibility.
Another key highlight of the weekend was a storytelling and creative writing workshop led by South Carolina author Antwan Eady, known for his acclaimed picture book, "Nigel and the Moon." This workshop inspired Jack and Jill youth to explore their creativity, storytelling, and literary expression.
Throughout the weekend, Jack and Jill families experienced the richness of the Lowcountry’s culture through learning, reflection, friendship, and service. By combining cultural engagement with practical service, the 2026 biennial National Youth Trip exemplified the organization's enduring commitment to leadership development, literacy, and community impact.
Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated is proud to partner with Jenkins Youth Family Village and the Murray Hill Recreation Association to carry out these activities, illustrating the power of literacy, the importance of representation, and the lasting value of community-based service. The event is supported by the Jack and Jill of America Foundation and Target Corporation.
