Shanghai Electric Achieves Major Milestone with First Overseas Gas Turbine Contract for Malaysia
Shanghai Electric Marks a Historic Milestone in Global Energy Sector
On September 13, 2026, Shanghai Electric, a prominent player in the energy market, announced a significant achievement by securing its first overseas contract for high-performance gas turbines. The contract is part of the Sarawak Samalaju Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) project in Malaysia, designed to have a capacity of 500 MW. This groundbreaking win not only underscores the technological prowess of Shanghai Electric but also highlights its growing competitiveness in the global gas turbine market.
In this agreement, Shanghai Electric will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) solution for the gas power plant, accompanied by a long-term service agreement (LTSA) that spans 25 years, covering all major equipment. Notably, all critical components including gas and steam turbines, generators, heat recovery steam generators, and air-cooled systems will be manufactured in-house by Shanghai Electric. This vertical integration allows the company to manage the entire lifecycle of the project, from equipment production and system integration to long-lasting operational support, placing it on par with established global leaders in the field of heavy gas turbines.
Shanghai Electric's current portfolio features two main models of high-performance gas turbines with rated capacities of 300 MW and 78 MW, respectively. So far, the company has delivered 103 units, with a total installed capacity exceeding 21,000 MW in operational projects. Furthermore, turbine units under Shanghai Electric’s long-term service programs have collectively achieved over 1.3 million operational hours. This robust manufacturing capability positions Shanghai Electric to supply new units as early as 2028.
The interest in high-performance gas turbines isn't confined to Malaysia. Project developers in several Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, have expressed a strong desire to place orders, indicating a flourishing market for advanced energy solutions. As the demand for efficient and reliable energy sources continues to rise, the role of innovative companies like Shanghai Electric becomes ever more crucial.
This milestone not only signifies a key development for Shanghai Electric but also represents a major step forward for the global energy landscape. By incorporating advanced technology and robust manufacturing practices, Shanghai Electric showcases its commitment to delivering sustainable and efficient energy solutions across the region.
As Shanghai Electric continues to expand its footprint in international markets, it remains poised to lead the way in high-performance gas turbine production, driving advancements in energy efficiency and reliability. With projects like the Sarawak Samalaju CCGT on the horizon, the company's future appears bright, firmly establishing its reputation as a key player in the evolving energy sector.
