MDA Space Secures Major Defense Contract for Optical Ground-Based Capability in Space Surveillance
MDA Space Wins Contract for Ground-Based Optical Space Surveillance
MDA Space Ltd. (TSX: MDA; NYSE: MDA), a reputable partner in the growing space industry, has made headlines with its recent contract with Canada's Defence Investment Agency (DIA). The contract focuses on delivering three Ground-Based Optical (GBO) observatories as part of the Surveillance of Space 2 program, designed to enhance the Department of National Defence's (DND) ability to monitor space activities and threats.
Valued at approximately $32 million, this initiative not only encompasses the delivery of these observatories but also the operational and maintenance support necessary for their long-term functionality. By 2028, MDA Space plans to establish these observatories in Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick, marking a significant step in bolstering Canada's space surveillance capabilities.
Enhancing Canada's Defence Capabilities
The DND aims to modernize Canada's defense infrastructure in light of escalating global threats to important space assets. Once operational, the GBO observatories will augment the existing capabilities of the Sapphire satellite operated by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). This satellite currently plays a crucial role in detecting, tracking, characterizing, and monitoring objects in deep space.
Mike Greenley, the CEO of MDA Space, stated, “As space environments become increasingly contested and congested, having reliable surveillance and domain awareness is essential for the Canadian Armed Forces and their allies. Our extensive experience in defense and security technology has positioned us as a trusted partner for the DND.
