Zacapa Celebrates 50 Years with a Special Liquid Innovation for North America

Zacapa's 50th Anniversary Edition: A Toast to Tradition and Innovation

Zacapa, the ultra-premium rum originated in Guatemala, celebrates its golden jubilee with an extraordinary release: the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition. This limited-edition rum represents the blend of artistry and the rich heritage that Zacapa has cultivated since 1976, elevating it to a revered status in the spirits world.

Created by Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, this anniversary edition marks a significant milestone for the brand, showcasing decades of meticulous craftsmanship. To honor this moment, Vásquez has curated a blend that features rums aged between 8 to 24 years, each contributing layers of depth to the final spirit. The innovation lies in its unique finishing process, which utilizes specially toasted barrels that once housed cacao skins and Cobán chiles, offering a distinct flavor profile that speaks to Zacapa’s Guatemalan roots.

The Inspiration Behind the Blend

In developing the 50th Anniversary Edition, Vásquez drew inspiration from Guatemala's ancient ceremonial traditions. Historically, these events featured drinks made from cacao and chiles, bridging the past with the present. "For the 50th edition, I wanted to explore a new expression of Zacapa while paying homage to our heritage," Vásquez shared. This resulted in a unique maturation process that adds rich notes of roasted cacao and spices, giving life to a significant part of the country’s culture through taste.

Maturation Process and Flavor Profile

The rum's journey begins with virgin sugar cane syrup, fermented and distilled on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. Post distillation, it is transported to Zacapa's aging facility, located over 2,300 meters above sea level, where it undergoes the dynamic Solera aging system. This system allows the rum to pass through a sequence of barrels, including those previously used for American whiskeys, Sherry wines, and Pedro Ximénez. The result is a complex symphony of aromas and flavors that defines the essence of Zacapa.

For the 50th Anniversary Edition, the final blend sees an additional maturation in barrels that have been specially toasted with cacao and Cobán chile skins. This process imparts the rum with aromas of vanilla and caramelized fruit, balanced against a backdrop of oak, caramel, and aromatic spices. On the palate, it reveals a smooth and rounded texture, culminating in a warm and lingering finish.

Celebrating the Milestone

In celebration of this milestone, Vásquez will embark on a tour across key markets in the United States, hosting intimate tastings and discussions that dive deep into Zacapa's craftsmanship, Guatemalan heritage, and the narrative shaped over 50 years.

Additionally, the anniversary will be commemorated with the GuateMai Tai, a special cocktail that combines the 50th Anniversary Edition with orange liqueur, almond syrup, fresh lime juice, and aromatic bitters, offered at select venues.

The commemorative bottle showcases a handwoven petate band, redesigned vibrantly for this occasion, encapsulating the brand's longstanding connection to Guatemalan craftsmanship and culture. Set to retail at $49.99, this limited edition is available starting October 15th in select markets across New York, California, Texas, and Florida.
