Michael O'Loughlin Takes the Helm as CEO and Executive Editor of NCR

On August 13, 2026, the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) announced a pivotal shift in its leadership with the appointment of Michael J. O'Loughlin as the new CEO and Executive Editor. O'Loughlin, who previously served as the executive editor at NCR, will succeed Joe Ferullo, who guided the organization for nearly four years.

The decision to bring O'Loughlin on board followed months of a thorough search process led by the NCR Board of Directors. Stephen Miller, the chair of the board, expressed complete confidence in O'Loughlin's ability to lead NCR into its next chapter, crediting him for his editorial vision and leadership skills. Before his appointment at NCR, O'Loughlin's extensive background included nearly a decade at America Media, where he first worked as a national correspondent and later took on the role of founding executive director of Outreach, a LGBTQ Catholic news site initiated by Jesuit Father James Martin. His career also included reporting at The Boston Globe’s Catholic news site, Crux, and serving as the communications manager for the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management.

Known for his impactful work, O'Loughlin is also an accomplished author, with his book Hidden Mercy exploring the church's response to the HIV and AIDS crisis in the United States. His reporting on this topic was recognized with a nomination for the GLAAD media award in 2023. His speaking engagements have taken him across the United States and internationally, sharing insights at numerous parishes, universities, medical schools, hospitals, and other organizations.

Drawing on his educational background, O'Loughlin holds a master's degree in religion from Yale Divinity School and a bachelor's degree in theology from St. Anselm College.

As he prepares to take on his new dual role as CEO and Executive Editor on September 14, O'Loughlin will collaborate closely with Ferullo during the transition period to ensure a seamless handover.
