WeRide Launches Autonomously Operating Robotaxi Trials in Abu Dhabi
WeRide Launches Robotaxi Trials in Abu Dhabi
In a significant stride towards modern mobility, WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has officially launched its trials for fully driverless robotaxis in Abu Dhabi. This pioneering initiative marks the first of its kind in the Middle East, positioning WeRide as a key player in the region's rapidly evolving transportation landscape. Starting this quarter, WeRide’s fleet of robotaxis will navigate the public roads of Abu Dhabi without a safety driver aboard, representing a monumental leap for intelligent mobility in the UAE.
WeRide's expansion strategy involves the introduction of services on two key areas: Al Maryah Island, known as the financial hub of Abu Dhabi, and Al Reem Island, a vibrant residential district. These areas will complement the existing robotaxi network that already operates on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes connecting to the Zayed International Airport since 2021. Jennifer Li, WeRide's Chief Financial Officer and Head of International Operations, expressed pride in achieving this milestone, stating, "WeRide is making history as the first company to operate fully driverless robotaxis in the Middle East, showcasing its leadership in autonomy within one of the world's most dynamic urban environments."
Enhancing Mobility Solutions
The company has meticulously selected these new zones to meet soaring demand for innovative mobility solutions in bustling regions. They aim to significantly broaden their customer base by bringing smart transport solutions to an even wider audience. Li continued, "By expanding our commercial operations into high-demand areas such as Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands, we are demonstrating our technological maturity while also moving closer to the mass commercialization of robotaxis."
WeRide has made remarkable strides in promoting its global expansion, with a primary focus on the UAE market. Notably, in July 2023, the company secured the first and only national license for driverless vehicles in the UAE, permitting the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads nationwide. This significant achievement lays the groundwork for WeRide’s growth in the region.
In December 2024, WeRide partnered with Uber to launch a ridesharing service in Abu Dhabi, creating the largest commercial robotaxi service outside of the United States and China. Excitingly, fully driverless commercial rides and additional service zones are scheduled to be introduced in the summer of 2025, pending regulatory approval. This ambitious plan underscores WeRide's commitment to transforming the urban mobility landscape.
