Zeon Corporation's New Facility: A Leap Toward Sustainable Production

Zeon Corporation, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has made significant strides in the field of sustainable production with the completion of a new bench facility designed to efficiently produce butadiene from plant-derived ethanol. This facility, located at the Tokuyama plant in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, was officially inaugurated on July 31, 2026, with representatives from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, NEDO, Yokohama Rubber, and other dignitaries present at the ceremony.

This initiative marks a key development in Zeon's commitment to achieving a carbon-neutral society. The technology not only addresses the need for non-fossil raw materials but also aims to reduce dependency on naphtha, thereby enhancing the business sustainability of the company. The goal is to start full-scale operations by January 2027, with a vision for commercialization by 2034.

At the inauguration, Zeon highlighted how butadiene produced at this facility would be utilized to create polybutadiene rubber (BR). Yokohama Rubber has plans to prototype tires using this new rubber and conduct trials to gather data for larger-scale validation, thus paving the way for further developments in sustainable materials.

Future Plans and Technologies

Additionally, Zeon has partnered with strategic collaborators for two significant research themes that have been accepted by NEDO as part of their Green Innovation Fund initiative. The first theme focuses on the high-efficiency synthesis of butadiene from ethanol, which aims to establish a pilot facility to confirm technology for societal implementation by 2030. The second theme involves the development of a biosynthetic technology to produce butadiene and isoprene directly from plant materials, intended to complement synthetic rubber manufacturing and recycling processes, with a goal of commercialization also set for 2034.

The Green Innovation Fund, established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, aims to achieve Japan's ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. By supporting companies in their research and development efforts over ten years, including from practical implementation to market penetration, it seeks to catalyze the structural transformation of energy and industry sectors.
