Corix Receives Historic Approval for Utah's First Thermal Utility, Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy Solutions

Corix Achieves Regulatory Breakthrough in Utah

In a transformative step for Utah's energy landscape, Corix Utah City Heating and Cooling LLC, a frontrunner in district energy systems, has secured regulatory approval from the Utah Public Service Commission (PSC) to operate as a designated heat corporation. This landmark decision marks a significant milestone as it enables Corix to offer both heating and cooling services to the state for the very first time.

A New Era for Energy in Utah

This approval provides Corix the green light to develop and manage a district energy system within Utah City, a pioneering mixed-use development located in Vineyard, Utah. The site is envisioned as a dynamic urban hub, integrating residential, commercial, retail, and medical research facilities. By utilizing an underground network of pipes linked to a central energy plant, Corix aims to deliver energy more efficiently, allowing for shared resources among different buildings, which will ultimately reduce costs and enhance sustainability.

The modular and scalable design of this energy system will enable Corix to incrementally expand capacity to meet the growing demands of the community as development progresses, with plans to serve up to 18 million square feet of mixed-use space. Service is expected to commence by the end of the current year.

The Role of the PSC

The PSC's role in regulating public utilities in Utah ensures that essential services such as electricity and natural gas remain safe, reliable, and affordably priced for consumers. By recognizing Corix as a heat corporation, the PSC has extended crucial consumer protections to Utah City. This development not only contributes to the state’s energy objectives but also supports economic growth and a greener utility model, all while enhancing the community's resilience and overall quality of life.

Lisa Sparrow, the CEO of Corix, articulated the significance of this achievement, stating, "This precedent-setting decision from the PSC represents a defining milestone in our partnership with Utah City Partners to bring Utah City to life as a world-class, vibrant community." She further emphasized Corix’s dedication to investing in essential infrastructure throughout Utah, which fosters growth, resilience, and economic development.
