Andrzej Bargiel Achieves Historic Oxygen-Free Descent of Nanga Parbat

Andrzej Bargiel's Groundbreaking Achievement on Nanga Parbat

Andrzej Bargiel, the Polish athlete sponsored by Red Bull, has made history by completing the first continuous oxygen-free descent of Nanga Parbat, one of the world's most perilous mountains. Located in the western Himalayas, Nanga Parbat stands tall at a staggering 8,126 meters, and despite numerous attempts, no climber had successfully linked its summit to the snowline in one continuous run. This monumental achievement was finalized on June 30, 2026, during his expedition titled Hic Sunt Leones – Nanga Parbat Ski Challenge 2026.

Bargiel embarked on his daring journey from Base Camp (4,200 m) early in the morning on June 28, climbing without supplemental oxygen. He faced the daunting ascents, spending the night at Camp II (6,200 m) and Camp III (6,850 m) before reaching the summit on June 30. His stay on the top lasted for 45 minutes, just long enough for him to prepare for the thrilling descent that lay ahead.

The descent route along the Messner path was filled with challenges, including a treacherous serac barrier that had forced previous climbers to abandon their skis. However, Bargiel expertly navigated these obstacles, proving that preparation and skill could overcome such dangers. He completed his descent at 3:00 PM below Camp I (4,400 m), spending an arduous two hours above the 7,900-meter mark in the mountain's death zone. The entire expedition, from Base Camp to summit and back, spanned over two days and nine hours.

In his reflection on this remarkable feat, Bargiel expressed his understanding that timing and conditions were critical to the success of his project. He appreciated the support from his team and Red Bull as essential components of his accomplishment. His success on Nanga Parbat adds to his impressive resume, as he is now also the first climber to have summited and skied the Broad Peak, K2, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Everest, and Nanga Parbat without supplemental oxygen. This incredible journey began for him in 2015 on Broad Peak.

Bargiel's achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a milestone in the sports of climbing and skiing, inspiring both athletes and adventurers around the world. His determination and exceptional skill continue to set new standards in high-altitude sports, providing a source of motivation for aspiring explorers. With this recent accomplishment, Bargiel's name is etched in the annals of mountaineering history, and his future endeavors will surely be watched with great anticipation.

Through this remarkable journey, Andrzej Bargiel not only challenges the limits of human endurance but also showcases the beauty and peril of the world's highest peaks, reminding us of the adventure that lies within pursuing the impossible.
