On May 28, 2025, the four parties formalized their collaboration aimed at enhancing textile recycling and promoting a sustainable lifestyle among local residents. The R-LOOP initiative is designed to make it easier for citizens to engage in responsible consumption by providing them with simple avenues to recycle their unused items.

The R-LOOP Initiative

The R-LOOP system facilitates the collection of unwanted clothing and household items through strategically placed collection boxes within the jurisdiction of Sumida Ward. Beginning May 30, 2025, four collection points will be established to accommodate local residents wishing to part with their textile and other materials. These locations include the Tachikawa Recycling Stockyard, Sumida Recycling Center, Sumida Sansan Plaza, and Kirakuri Sumida Workshop.

The aim is to promote a culture of recycling while reducing waste output in the growing population of Sumida, predicted to increase through 2030. By integrating the R-LOOP system, the collaborative effort will not only aid in waste reduction but also foster social employment opportunities through the Sumida Sansan Association, which will manage the collected items.

One of the unique aspects of the partnership is the donation of collected materials. For every kilogram of items collected through the R-LOOP boxes, one yen will be donated to the Sumida Sansan Association, thus enhancing local employment support initiatives. How It Works

The collected items through R-LOOP will be transported to Book Off’s facilities for sorting and will be either reused or recycled as appropriate. Further, fibers from the discarded materials will be processed and transformed through BPLab’s textile recycling system, BIOLOGIC LOOP, to ensure they are reintegrated into the supply chain.

Supported Items

The R-LOOP initiative has defined what can be deposited into the boxes. Accepted items include:

• - General clothing (new/uncontaminated items only)
• - Fashion accessories, household goods, and toys
• - Sports equipment

However, items such as damaged goods, used masks, intimate apparel, and any hazardous waste will not be accepted. This ensures that the recycling process remains efficient and effective, minimizing contamination and maximizing resource recovery.
