Starbucks Launches Youth Program to Support Future Generations

Supporting Future Generations: Starbucks Youth Program

Starbucks Coffee Japan, led by CEO Hisako Morii, has recently announced the launch of the Starbucks Youth Program. This initiative is designed to support the younger generation by providing various measures to nurture their potential and create opportunities for growth. Noteworthy aspects include the introduction of a scholarship system for employees, as well as an enhancement of the existing Hummingbird Program, aimed at offering enriching experiences to inspire children’s dreams and learning.

Commitment to Nurturing Local Futures

As Starbucks celebrates its 30th anniversary in Japan, it has established over 2,100 stores across all 47 prefectures, employing around 60,000 partners. Notably, about 70% of these partners are from the youth generation, aged between 18 and 29, contributing significantly to community and business growth.

Recognizing that the future of each community rests in the hands of its young residents, Starbucks believes that supporting future generations is tantamount to considering the future of the region itself. Under the umbrella of the Starbucks Youth Program, the company aims to enhance support for both partners and local youth.

Scholarship Program for Career Development

In alignment with its 30th anniversary, Starbucks has introduced a scholarship program for the first time in Japan, modeled after similar successful initiatives in the U.S. and Korea. This system is aimed at helping employees pursue higher education while continuing to work. In collaboration with ZEN University, which offers practical online learning about social issues and community development, this program seeks to equip young partners with the necessary skills to navigate a rapidly changing societal landscape. By doing so, Starbucks hopes to broaden the perspectives and options available to these individuals in their personal and professional lives.

Eligible partners who have worked for at least six months by the end of September of the application year—ages 18 to 29—will have their entrance examination fees, enrollment fees, and annual tuition fees fully covered. Other partners will have a portion of their costs supported. The first year of enrollment under this initiative is planned for April 2027.

About ZEN University

ZEN University is an online institution set to open in April 2025, established through a partnership between the Japan Foundation and Dwango Co., Ltd. The university aims to provide educational opportunities that cater to a diverse array of fields, empowering students to develop skills required in the AI era, alongside practical lessons from industry professionals. Currently, approximately 7,000 students are enrolled, benefiting from a curriculum that transcends geographical and economic limitations.

Hummingbird Program Enhancements

In response to the widening gap in experiential opportunities for children during summer vacation, the Hummingbird Program has been shifted to run from July 22, 2026, to September 1, 2026. Initiated in 2012 as a donation program to support children and youth, this updated version seeks to provide enriched experiences during the summer when opportunities tend to dwindle.

Customers can participate through several initiatives, including the issuance of the Hummingbird Starbucks card and donations based on card usage, or by donating their rewards from the Starbucks® Reward program. Through these efforts, Starbucks aims to create a future where all children can access enriching experiences.

Aiming to Address Experience Gaps

The Hummingbird Program emphasizes supporting children’s dreams and learning through contributions that enhance their practical experiences. By addressing the growing social issue of experiential inequality among children, it enables young individuals to uncover their passions and broaden their future choices through various activities outside of school, such as sports, arts, and music.

The program's name derives from a South American legend about the hummingbird, symbolizing how even small actions can collectively lead to significant change. The funds raised will assist programs like CFC, which helps disadvantaged children gain access to various experiences.

Events and Activities for Enrichment

This year’s Hummingbird experience variety includes events like chalk art creation and sign language cafes, where employees will share their unique talents with local children. These activities are not only enriching for the kids but also encourage partners to reflect on their own childhood experiences, reconnecting with what brings them joy.

Details about upcoming events and participation can be found on Starbucks’ official website, creating a transparent and secure environment for the community to engage.

The Vision for Positive Change

Starbucks believes that fostering connections among individuals can generate immeasurable potential. Through the Starbucks Youth Program, the company strives to deliver enriching experiences that empower children, ultimately expanding their horizons and nurturing their potential for the future. Together, these initiatives reflect Starbucks' commitment to being a proactive community member while advocating for the next generation’s growth and success.
