Launching Heritage Adapts!: A Global Initiative for Climate Resilience by 2030
Today marks the launch of Heritage Adapts!, a groundbreaking global initiative aiming to unify the heritage sector toward a crucial shared goal: facilitating climate adaptation for a minimum of 3,000 heritage sites and practices by the year 2030. This campaign, spearheaded by the coalition led by Preserving Legacies with the support of the National Geographic Society, seeks to empower local stewards with the tools they need to take decisive, localized climate adaptation actions.
Recognized within the framework of the UN's Global Climate Action Agenda, Heritage Adapts! stands out as one of 120 promising plans targeting climate action. Its mission is clear: to demonstrate that by protecting cultural heritage, communities can bolster their resilience against climate threats. The increasing risks posed to heritage sites are alarming; a recent UNESCO report indicates a 40% rise in climate-related hazards affecting dedicated sites over the past decade. With more than 25% of these sites facing potentially irreversible tipping points by 2050, the urgency for this initiative cannot be overstated.
This campaign not only seeks to mitigate the risks to heritage but also aims to utilize heritage as an essential part of climate solution strategies. The acknowledgment that many heritage sites and practices remain untracked within international frameworks signifies a pressing gap; thus, the initiative emphasizes the necessity of incorporating heritage into climate finance and policy.
Heritage Adapts! plans to bridge this gap by engaging over 100 organizations and heritage stewards globally. The initiative emphasizes that “as the world hurtles toward 2 degrees Celsius of warming, we are in a race to help communities—and the culture and heritage that sustain them—adapt while there is still time.” This sentiment reflects the shared vigour and commitment partners have toward addressing climate change collaboratively.
Central to the campaign is the development of an online community action platform designed to create an accessible, step-by-step program for adaptation. This platform will enable heritage stewards to share knowledge, learn, and connect with one another, ensuring that communities can protect irreplaceable cultural sites worldwide. Ian Miller, Chief Science and Innovation Officer at the National Geographic Society, stated, “By uniting science with local wisdom, the Heritage Adapts! initiative is ensuring that we will go far together, safeguarding our shared human history for generations to come.”
Furthermore, Dan Ioschpe, COP 30 Climate High-Level Champion, highlights the importance of culture and heritage in shaping community resilience. He underscores that cultural identity allows people to understand risk and respond effectively to changes brought by climate crises. The collective action demonstrated by the Heritage Adapts! campaign represents a robust framework for fostering collaborative efforts among multiple stakeholders.
As communities across the globe grapple with climate impacts, Heritage Adapts! is not just an initiative but a movement towards a future where heritage preservation and climate adaptation go hand in hand. Individuals and communities are encouraged to join this ambitious endeavor by visiting the community platform at act.heritageadapts.org.
By galvanizing action and providing essential resources, the Heritage Adapts! campaign is a pivotal step in not only preserving global heritage but also enhancing the resilience of communities significantly at risk due to climate change.
