BankPark YOKOHAMA: A New Era for Yokohama's Historic Sites
The historic Yokohama building formerly known as the Yokohama Branch of the First National Bank has been transformed into a vibrant community space named
BankPark YOKOHAMA. This project is spearheaded by a collaborative effort between Takenaka Corporation, CRAFTING JAPAN, and Goodroom Inc. The facility's name reflects its aim to blend the rich history of the site with the modern needs of the community, promising a place for gathering, learning, and creativity, scheduled to open its doors fully on October 4, 2025.
A Dive into History
Constructed during the Meiji era, this banking establishment is notable not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical significance. After surviving the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, it was reconstructed and preserved as part of a redevelopment effort in 2003. Officially recognized as a historical building by Yokohama city, the structure was saved from demolition through innovative techniques that showcased its heritage. The name
BankPark symbolizes a fusion of the traditional "Bank"—indicating its roots—and the concept of a "Park," which conjures a public space meant for all. The designers envision it as a light-filled space bringing people together through cultural and artistic activities.
The facility, built to honor the legacy of Eiichi Shibusawa, one of Japan’s founding fathers of capitalism, is set against the backdrop of Yokohama’s financial district from a century ago. The preservation and restoration work was completed at the hands of Takenaka Corporation in collaboration with architectural firm Makki Architectural Planning Office.
goodroom lounge: A New Workspace Concept
In conjunction with the unveiling of BankPark YOKOHAMA, Goodroom has launched its new shared office space,
goodroom lounge Yokohama Bashamichi, on July 31, ahead of its grand opening. The lounge features a blend of private office areas, flexible coworking spaces, and a lounge designed to foster collaboration and engagement. Located within the historical bank's walls, this workspace is equipped with advanced amenities, such as monthly membership plans and facial recognition technology for drop-in users. Events aimed at regional residents and nearby businesses will create a hub for networking and community interaction.
Crafting Culture at CRAFT.
The ground floor of BankPark YOKOHAMA will house a unique retail space called
CRAFT., dedicated to showcasing local and global craftsmanship. This area will serve not only as a gallery for artisan works but will also include a café offering curated food and beverages, a flower shop, and a library aimed at promoting cultural and artistic expression. CRAFT. is envisioned to be a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying a delicious bite or a good read. The store is set to open in line with the grand unveiling of BankPark.
What Lies Ahead
The grand opening in 2025 will mark a significant milestone for Yokohama. With ongoing renovations scheduled to finish by late June, the anticipation is building. Visitors can catch sneak peeks and updates via the teaser website
