Expanding Support for CDR Credits in Tokyo
The realization of a zero-emission Tokyo necessitates not only measures to reduce CO₂ emissions but also initiatives aimed at capturing and removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, commonly referred to as Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). In light of this, the availability of carbon credits, which can be traded for the CO₂ removed, has emerged as a critical component for progressing CDR efforts. Market demand for carbon credits is projected to grow, attracting attention both domestically and internationally.
In response to this growing need, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is initiating a new program designed to promote the generation of carbon credits through CDR. Starting from fiscal year 2008, this initiative will broaden its support to include not only the use of natural resources but also the employment of cutting-edge technologies for carbon credit production. The program will extend beyond the borders of Tokyo to include locations across Japan and internationally. Additionally, the duration of the program and the funding limits will be significantly increased.
This initiative aims to recruit medium-sized enterprises, small businesses, and startups located in Tokyo to participate in creating carbon credits through CDR. Here are the key details of the program:
