Turning Unwanted Items into Life-Saving Vaccines for Children in Developing Countries

A Unique Initiative: Donating Unused Items to Save Lives

A new campaign launched in collaboration with Book Off and the nonprofit organization JCV has become a vital channel for supporting children's vaccination efforts in developing countries. This innovative initiative invites individuals to donate their unwanted items, ranging from books and CDs to jewelry and electronics, turning clutter into life-saving resources. Between April 1 and May 30, 2025, the campaign successfully raised funds equivalent to 16,750 polio vaccines, reflecting a financial contribution of approximately ¥334,993.

This partnership employs Book Off's delivery purchase and donation service called "Kimochi to," which facilitates a simple and impactful way for individuals to contribute to global health efforts without significant barriers. The range of accepted items for donation includes not only media like games and DVDs but also brand goods, jewelry, precious metals, and various electronics. The total number of applications received during the campaign stood at 129, demonstrating a community commitment to aiding children worldwide.

The Purpose Behind Donating

The need for reliable vaccine access is increasingly critical. Polio, tuberculosis, and whooping cough continue to be threats in developing nations, claiming the lives of approximately 4,000 children daily—equating to one child every 20 seconds. Each vaccination could prevent these tragedies. JCV’s mission focuses on delivering vaccines to children in need, offering hope and protection against infectious diseases. Thanks to their contributions, since 1994, they have enabled over 133 million vaccinations across developing countries.

The "Kimochi to" service has not only provided a platform for individuals to engage in meaningful contributions but has also aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 17 by promoting recycling and cooperation. To date, the accumulated support via this initiative has reached around ¥490 million, making tangible differences in the fight against preventable diseases.

Upcoming Campaign and Ongoing Needs

Continuing this momentum, JCV is organizing another urgent campaign from August 2 to September 1, aimed at supporting earthquake victims in Myanmar and Vanuatu. Recent disasters in December and March highlighted the persistent need for assistance in these regions, where vaccination efforts have stalled, leading to a concerning resurgence of diseases such as polio. As part of this initiative, people can again send unwanted books, games, and hobby items, which will finance vaccinations for affected children. Each item donated becomes a vital resource in curbing the spread of infectious diseases in these highly vulnerable populations.

We urgently need your support. By simply packing and sending in your unused items, you can take part in a larger mission to protect children’s health in disaster-struck areas. To learn more about this campaign or to participate, visit Book Off's Official Donation Page.

The Impact of Community Support

The ongoing work of JCV relies heavily on donations and community involvement. Their recent announcement of being able to send vaccines worth approximately ¥123 million to Myanmar, Laos, Bhutan, and Vanuatu in 2024 showcases the incredible reach of community-driven efforts. Each reinforced partnership and donation has significant implications for the future health of children in these nations.
