The Popularity of Iced Coffee in Japan: Trends and Preferences Among Young Adults
As the summer months draw near, iced coffee continues to hold its rank as the preferred beverage for many Japanese people, especially the youth. A recent study conducted by UCC (Ueshima Coffee Company) highlights the growing demand and trends related to iced coffee consumption among individuals in their 20s to 50s. According to the research, a staggering
86.2% of participants reported drinking iced coffee at least once a week, making it the top choice for summer beverages.
Limited Choices in Iced Coffee
Despite its popularity, the options for enjoying iced coffee seem to be quite limited. The survey revealed that most iced coffee drinkers tended to stick to traditional choices like black coffee or café au lait. Many respondents noted a lower satisfaction rate for iced coffee compared to hot coffee, primarily due to fewer available options for combination and aroma. For instance, only
14.3% of participants felt completely satisfied with their iced coffee experience, in contrast to
21.1% for hot coffee. This gap indicates a significant opportunity to enhance iced coffee varieties and preparations.
The Changing Palate of Young Consumers
Interestingly, the study also uncovered that younger generations are eager to experiment with new and creative iced coffee recipes. Many from their 20s expressed interest in combining iced coffee with yogurt, creating a refreshing dessert-like experience that merges flavors and textures. This reflects a broader trend where iced coffee is not just viewed as a beverage but as a versatile ingredient in culinary applications.
Upcoming Innovations in Iced Coffee
In response to these findings, UCC plans to expand the iced coffee experience in 2026 under the theme “Delicious Individuality in Summer Coffee”. Activities will include collaborations with renowned cafes across Japan and pop-up events designed to introduce consumers to unique iced coffee options, such as the widely acclaimed “Secret Drip” event. Versatile education programs in coffee appreciation are also set to launch, seeking to provide both beginners and coffee enthusiasts with a deeper understanding of coffee brewing and tasting.
Survey Insights
The survey, conducted from April 14 to 15, 2026, among 800 male and female participants aged 20 to 50 who consume coffee weekly, revealed the following key points:
- - Point 1: During summer, 86.2% chose iced coffee over other beverages such as barley tea or green tea, solidifying its position as the number one drink of choice.
- - Point 2: Most consumers prefer quick and easy methods for enjoying iced coffee at home, with over half opting for store-bought bottled or canned coffee. Once at home, common preparation methods include drinking it black or with milk and sugar, which account for 84% of responses.
- - Point 3: Satisfaction levels for iced coffee trail behind hot coffee, with respondents highlighting the inability to experience the aromatic qualities and variety that hot coffee typically offers.
- - Point 4: The desire for iced coffee experimentation is particularly high among 20-somethings, who showed significant interest in innovative ideas such as yogurt-infused iced coffee.
