Sun Country Airlines Flight Attendants Celebrate Major Contract Victory with Teamsters Union

Major Victory for Sun Country Flight Attendants

In a remarkable development for labor relations, flight attendants for Sun Country Airlines, represented by Teamsters Local 120, have successfully ratified a new five-year contract. This landmark agreement signifies a major improvement in wages, benefits, and working conditions, following a credible strike threat by more than 700 flight attendants.

Contract Highlights

The new contract kicks off with an astonishing 21% wage increase effective immediately, paving the way for up to a total wage increase of 58% over the duration of the agreement. Additionally, the deal includes enhanced contributions to retirement plans, and stricter scheduling rules that offer better flexibility during holidays. Importantly, flight attendants will also benefit from a reduced timeline to reach maximum pay, a significant improvement from the previous structure.

The announcement came from the General President of Teamsters, Sean M. O'Brien, who praised the dedication and resilience of the flight attendants. He stated, “This agreement reflects the hard work and value of the Sun Country Teamsters, and their efforts have resulted in tangible improvements in their quality of life.”

Perseverance Pays Off

Tom Erickson, President of Teamsters Local 120, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the members' commitment to advocating for their rights and dignities as workers. “This new contract not only rewards our members but sets a standard that we hope will resonate throughout the industry,” he remarked.

The feedback from flight attendants has been overwhelmingly positive. Veteran flight attendant Elaine Rishovd, who has been with Sun Country for 30 years and is a member of Local 120, expressed her pride and joy over the agreement. “This is one of the best contracts we have won since I joined Sun Country,” Rishovd noted. She emphasized that the improvements cover crucial aspects like wage increases and protections, helping support her family while restoring pride in working for the airline.

Union Background

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters boasts a rich history advocating for labor rights across various sectors, including airlines, transportation, and more. They represent over 1.3 million dedicated workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, making them one of the largest and most influential labor unions.

The recent contract ratification demonstrates the power of solidarity and collective bargaining. The flight attendants' ability to mobilize and unite for better working conditions sets a powerful example for workers across all industries.

As the aviation sector continues to recover and evolve post-pandemic, such contract victories will play a critical role in shaping labor relations in the industry. The success of Sun Country flight attendants could inspire similar movements among other airline workers, pushing for equitable treatment and a workforce that feels valued and respected.

This considerable achievement not only impacts those working at Sun Country but also resonates within the wider labor movement, serving as a beacon of hope for workers fighting to improve their conditions in various sectors.
