A Lifesaving Journey: Over 40 Rescued Dogs Fly from California to Long Island
In an inspiring operation, more than 40 dogs and puppies have been rescued and transported from California to Long Island by the North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. This significant transport, which took place on March 8, 2025, highlights the ongoing challenges posed by wildfires in California and the urgent need to find loving homes for pets displaced by these disasters.
The Need for Action
In recent months, the devastation caused by wildfires has left many shelters in California at full capacity. Animals continue to be relinquished as their owners struggle to cope with the aftermath of these disasters. To address the critical situation, North Shore Animal League America collaborated with the Riverside County Department of Animal Services and Race For Life Rescue. Their goal was to open up space in overcrowded shelters by relocating some animals to areas where they can be welcomed and adopted into loving homes.
Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President of Operations at North Shore Animal League, explained, "We have been in contact with our shelter partners across California offering any assistance we could provide since the devastating wildfires hit. Our experience has taught us that support is often needed long after the initial emergency efforts have concluded. This large-scale rescue effort is truly rewarding, as it allows us to help shelter partners and bring these dogs and puppies to our campus for adoption."
The Transport Operation
The animals were transported aboard a specially equipped commuter aircraft, modified for cargo use. The journey began in Chino, California, with the plane making a stop in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where Animal League America’s mobile adoption units were ready for coordination with staff and volunteers. These dedicated individuals were there to ensure the rescued animals reached their final destination in Port Washington, New York, safely and comfortably.
Daylin Valencia, Programs Manager at the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, stated, "With more dogs entering our shelters than our community can adopt, the overcrowding crisis is immense. This flight is essential in helping alleviate some of these challenges. Our team is fully invested in preparing these dogs for their cross-country journey and providing them with the loving homes they deserve."
Welcoming New Residents
Upon arrival at the North Shore Animal League campus, the newly arrived pups will undergo comprehensive health and behavior assessments. Staff, including veterinary, behavior, and grooming teams, will ensure that each dog is given the necessary attention and care following their arduous travel. This is an essential step before they can be cleared for adoption, which is usually finalized in the days and weeks following their arrival.
Apart from providing critical shelter and care, North Shore Animal League is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of pet adoption and responsible pet ownership. Over the years, they have successfully saved more than 1.2 million lives and continue to strive toward their mission of finding homes for every adoptable animal.
Through this collaboration and the rescue efforts displayed, these over 40 rescued dogs and puppies have been given a second chance at life, far from the dangers they once faced. The dedication shown by North Shore Animal League America and its partners underscores the profound impact that animal welfare organizations can have, especially during times of crisis. By bringing awareness to the plight of displaced animals, they are not only saving lives but also encouraging others to engage in rescue and adoption efforts.
