Asuna Yanagi's First Directorial Film 'Rainy Blue' Achieves Remarkable Milestone

This year's festival saw an overwhelming response, with 4,129 submissions from 131 countries. National Excitement for 'Rainy Blue'
In anticipation of its international debut, 'Rainy Blue' has already begun screening in Japan. The film premiered at the Osaka Asian Film Festival in March 2025, gaining recognition for Yanagi as the youngest director in history. Following its premiere, 'Rainy Blue' had a sneak preview at Denkikan in Kumamoto starting July 4, 2025, followed by its official release at Uplink Kichijoji in Tokyo on July 18, 2025. The film has been well-received, with sold-out screenings reported in the first three days at Uplink Kichijoji. Subsequent screenings will take place at various theaters, including Aup Link Kyoto from July 25 and Kariya Theater in Aichi from August 15.
A Journey to Filming Locations in Kumamoto
With the film shot entirely in Kumamoto, fans have become intrigued by the picturesque locations featured in the film, leading to a rise in “pilgrimages” to film sites. One notable location, Kono Café in Tamato, has even introduced a special item—Keema Curry with Avocado Topping—as a tribute to the film, available only in August.
Exclusive Signings at Denkikan
To celebrate the official selection at SIWFF and the successful first month since its preview, Asuna Yanagi will hold signing events at Denkikan on August 2 and 3. Fans can meet the director and get exclusive merchandise after the film screenings.
