CARFAX's Free Vehicle Recall Search Service Hits Major Milestone with 10 Billion Checks

CARFAX's Remarkable Achievement in Vehicle Safety

During the recently observed Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, CARFAX proudly announced a monumental achievement — its free Vehicle Recall Search Service has now performed over 10 billion checks on vehicles across the United States. This tool, developed in collaboration with the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, is instrumental in identifying vehicles with outstanding safety recalls, thereby enhancing road safety.

Over the years, the program has successfully addressed the issue of unfixed vehicle recalls, aiding states and eligible organizations in their efforts to improve vehicle safety. Not only does this service facilitate the identification of vehicles needing recall repairs, but it also contributes significantly to reducing potential safety risks on the road. According to CARFAX Vice President Faisal Hasan, the data indicates that more than 30 million recalls have been repaired thanks to the timely notifications generated by this service.

Key Statistics and Impact

Since its launch in 2018, the Vehicle Recall Search Service has become a crucial asset for state motor vehicle agencies, public safety departments, and inspection programs. Currently, eight state DMVs — including California, New York, Ohio, Arizona, Texas, Connecticut, Maryland, and Washington, along with Puerto Rico — leverage this service to ensure ongoing vehicle safety.

For instance, since entering the program in 2021, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has checked more than 13 million unique VINs, uncovering over nine million open recalls. The BMV has attributed a significant increase in recall rectifications to the integration of recall information into vehicle registration renewal reminders, which are dispatched in compliance with state law.

Accessibility for Consumers

Consumers also have the opportunity to check their vehicle’s recall status at no cost through the CARFAX website or by downloading the CARFAX Car Care app. This application is designed to provide maintenance reminders while ensuring that vehicle owners stay informed about potentially hazardous recalls.

As noted by John Bozzella, the president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the success of this program underscores the importance of information accessibility. “When drivers are made aware of recalls and take necessary action to have them addressed, road safety naturally improves. This is a goal that all stakeholders in the automotive industry can support.”

The Path Forward

Despite the encouraging progress, CARFAX emphasizes that one in five vehicles still remains unaccounted for, underlining the need for further outreach and participation from additional states. The potential for increased vehicle checks through the simple, no-cost vehicle recall service is substantial, and CARFAX continues to invite more organizations, especially state DMVs, to join this initiative.

In conclusion, CARFAX's relentless push for vehicle safety through its Free Vehicle Recall Search Service has resulted in a substantial impact on road safety nationwide. As they celebrate the achievement of surpassing 10 billion checks, it serves as a reminder of the collective efforts necessary to address and resolve open recalls on the road. By fostering a culture of safety and awareness, CARFAX and its partners are paving the way for a safer driving experience for all Americans.
