Canaan Inc. Expands Its Role in Sustainable Heating Solutions with New Nordic Partnership

In a significant development for both Canaan Inc. and the renewable energy sector, the company, known for its innovations in crypto mining technology, has been awarded a competitive bid to contribute to a district heating network in the Nordic region. This initiative not only marks a pivotal moment for Canaan but also reaffirms the company's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

Canaan Inc. (NASDAQ: CAN) announced on May 19, 2026, that it will supply its advanced Avalon A1566HA series hydro-cooled units, which have a combined heating capacity of around 8 megawatts (MW). This breakthrough technology seeks to transform waste heat produced by computational processes into usable thermal energy, destined for local heating networks.

Innovative Technology and Capacity

The heating solution exemplifies a crucial partnership with a leading heating provider in the Nordic region, aimed at replacing traditional heating mechanisms that now fuel the urban landscape. Canaan's units can deliver hot water at temperatures near 80 degrees Celsius, making them incredibly efficient for integration into existing district heating systems.

Currently, approximately 2 MW of capacity, utilizing 228 A1566HA units, is providing reliable hot water to the local community, featuring a strong performance that led to a follow-up order in March 2026 for an additional 6MW, amounting to 692 units. This order showcases the industry's recognition of Canaan's technology, representing a robust validation of its hash-to-heat solutions that aim to address global heating challenges.

Advantages Over Traditional Heating

The A1566HA units are designed to maintain operational flexibility, adapting seamlessly to varying demand profiles, thanks to their parallel system architecture. This contrasts sharply with more traditional single-source heating systems, such as boilers, which can struggle to provide consistent thermal output. The dynamic overclocking and underclocking capabilities of these high-density computing systems not only enhance stability but also optimize power-to-heat conversion efficiency, ultimately leading to lower emissions and a cleaner energy future.

District heating solutions present an attractive option for municipalities, often incentivized by government programs because they aid in distributing hot water across urban centers efficiently. Canaan Inc.'s hash-to-heat systems fulfill a longstanding challenge in the industry: scaling the delivery of usable, high-grade heat. This aligns with a broader trend toward replacing outdated fossil fuel heating solutions that have long needed upgrades.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

Nangeng Zhang, Canaan's chairman and CEO, stated, "This selection reflects both the strength of our technology and the depth of our engineering knowledge. Heat reuse is no longer an ancillary byproduct of compute. It is central to building a more efficient, sustainable energy future." Canaan's innovative approach emphasizes optimized thermal performance and deployment efficiency tailored to the modern demands of district heating infrastructures.

As the Nordic region continues to set benchmarks in district heating innovation, this collaboration signifies a considerable step towards deploying next-generation energy solutions. The 8 MW project is expected to supply reliable heating to around 2,800 homes, a notable stride toward establishing economically efficient and environmentally friendly heating systems.
