Grand Opening of Tony Oursler's Major Exhibition at TOKYO NODE
Today marks the opening of a significant
exhibition at TOKYO NODE, titled "Tony Oursler: Between Technology and Spirituality – Magic, Media, and Art.” Running from July 3 through September 27, this exhibition marks the first large-scale showcase of Oursler's works in Japan. Curated by Reiko Tsubaki and Alice Nien-Pu Kho, the exhibition features the pioneering multimedia artist whose vision merges art, technology, and the mysteries of human perception.
At an exclusive preview, Tony Oursler expressed his excitement, stating, "It has been my dream for many years to hold an exhibition at TOKYO NODE. I believe that art is a space for participation, where artworks come alive through the audience. I hope to realize this vision through this exhibition."
Reiko Tsubaki, the main curator, expressed pride in hosting Oursler's first large-scale exhibition in Japan, noting that the artist has held around 250 solo exhibitions across 34 countries. Oursler's works challenge our beliefs in the face of modern technology, where AI and surveillance influence perceptions. "In a world where technology and magic intersect, Oursler’s art prompts us to reconsider what we should believe in. I am thrilled we can finally present this in a substantial manner in Japan," Tsubaki remarked.
Co-curator Alice Nien-Pu Kho discussed how Oursler’s works allow for a unique perspective on the history of technology from the 1970s to the present. The exhibition presents an archive of how artists interact with and evolve alongside technology through various media including film, projections, television, and posters.
Visitors can explore a total of
23 new and previously unreleased pieces, including major installations that utilize the expansive 15-meter dome space at TOKYO NODE. Notable highlights include two world premieres:
“Chimera” (2026), newly created for this exhibition, and
“Kū” (2000), a work co-developed over two decades with renowned music artist David Bowie and composer Glenn Branca. Additionally, audiences can immerse themselves in Oursler's installation
“Specular” (2021), featuring various floating eyes in a dark space, as well as the long-form visual installation
“The Unknowable” (2015-2016), both making their debut in Japan.
The exhibition will showcase a total of 49 captivating pieces, from Oursler's notable early works to those created specifically for this show, all offering viewers an unforgettable experience.
