Celebrating Jazz Excellence: Yamano Big Band Jazz Contest 2026
On the weekend of August 15-16, 2026, the vibrant atmosphere of jazz filled the air in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa, as the
57th Yamano Big Band Jazz Contest took place at
CALTZ Kawasaki. This annual event, organized by
Yamano Music Co., Ltd., showcased numerous university bands competing for the prestigious title and various awards.
This year, the spotlight shone brightly on
Keio University’s Light Music Society, who triumphed over fierce competition to secure the
Grand Prize. Their performance captivated the audience and judges alike, earning them the recognition of being the best band this year.
The contest was not only a platform for competition but also a celebration of jazz education and performance among universities across Japan. Various bands brought their best to the stage, demonstrating incredible talent and passion. The results were as follows:
- - 1st Place: Keio University Light Music Society - Best Band Award
- - 2nd Place: Aoyama Gakuin University Royal Sounds Jazz Orchestra - Outstanding Band Award
- - 3rd Place: Osaka University The New Wave Jazz Orchestra - Outstanding Band Award
- - 4th Place: Showa Music University Lily Jazz Orchestra
- - 5th Place: Doshisha University The Third Herd Orchestra
- - 6th Place: Meiji University Big Sounds Society Orchestra
- - 7th Place: K.M.P. New Sound Orchestra
- - 8th Place: Los Guaracheros
- - 9th Place: Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Shiwashiwa-z
- - 10th Place: Gakushuin University Sky Sounds Jazz Orchestra
In addition to the band awards, individual musicians were recognized for their exceptional performances.
Darren Moore from Kyoto University’s Dark Blue New Sounds Orchestra won the
Best Soloist Award for his trumpet skills, while
Kanade Akasaka (Violin/AS) from K.M.P. New Sound Orchestra and
Sora Shimada (Piano) from Doshisha University received the
Outstanding Soloist Awards.
A unique accolade, the
Best Rank Up Award, which is presented to the band that improved the most from the previous year, was awarded to
Kokon University’s Newport Swing Orchestra. Additionally, the
Gakuban Award, chosen by participating bands themselves, was bestowed upon
Meiji University's Big Sounds Society Orchestra, signifying their peer recognition for outstanding musicianship.
This year's contest also featured a special appearance by
Hoo-chan, the official mascot and ambassador for Yamano Music, who engaged with the audience and added charm to the event.
Hoo-chan not only celebrated the performances but also brought attention to the importance of jazz education and the incredible talent present across universities in Japan.
