Exploring Sustainable Agriculture: Online Networking Event in Sado City

On August 1st, an insightful online event, the "Living Creatures Survey Online Networking Event" was organized by the Pal System Consumers' Cooperative Federation in collaboration with Sado Agricultural Cooperative. Taking place in Sado City, located in Niigata Prefecture, the event aimed to foster understanding of environmentally friendly agricultural practices while emphasizing the importance of biodiversity in rice farming. A total of 22 attendees participated, engaging in discussions and presentations that highlighted local ecosystem dynamics and sustainable rice production methods.

Online Experience of Sado's Terraced Rice Fields and Biotopes

Starting at 9 AM, the event connected participants virtually to the terraced rice fields and biotopes in Katanoo District, situated approximately 180 meters above sea level. Participants were treated to live reports from local children who conducted creature surveys, providing first-hand insights into the unique biodiversity of the area. The presentations included information on the characteristics and cultivation background of Koijikari rice, also known as "Rice that Nurtures the Toki," a variety grown with reduced synthetic pesticides and fertilizers as part of eco-challenges.

The region is characterized by its steep terraced landscapes, where the rice fields present a mix of shapes and sizes, making traditional mechanization challenging. Farmers devote significant effort to reduce environmental impacts, maintaining special cultivation standards while managing the labor-intensive task of mowing the grass multiple times a year.

Thriving Wildlife in the Agricultural Environment

Over the course of the surveys, participants documented over 30 different species of creatures thriving in this healthy agricultural ecosystem. Notably, the decrease in synthetic pesticide use has benefitted species such as the loach, a favorite food of the Toki bird, along with various aquatic insects like water bugs and dragonfly larvae. This event served as an opportunity to demonstrate the success of sustainable practices that promote biodiversity alongside rice production.

A Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

During the event, Yamada, a staff member from JA Sado, shared insights about the Toki bird, mentioning its peculiar feeding habits and how the community collectively works to protect its habitat. Producer Kanzo expressed the importance of sharing the experience of cultivating rice that supports the Toki, adding, "There are challenges in rice farming, but I hope many people will come to understand this special rice cultivation process."

Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Japan's agricultural sector faces challenges including an aging farmer population and increasing climate change-related extreme weather events that threaten future food security. Pal System actively aims to ensure that farming communities across Japan remain vibrant and pass on their rich natural and cultural heritage to future generations.

As part of its commitment, Pal System has maintained the "Living Creatures Survey" initiative for over 20 years. This program enables consumers to connect with producers, learn about biodiversity in rice paddies, and appreciate the harmony between farming and environmental stewardship.

By visualizing environmentally friendly agricultural practices, Pal System strives to increase agricultural participation among consumers and assemble a sustainable agricultural environment for the future.
