La Luce Cristallina Honored as Manufacturer of the Year by SBA San Antonio

La Luce Cristallina Wins Prestigious Award

La Luce Cristallina, a trailblazer in the field of silicon photonics, has achieved a significant milestone by winning the Manufacturer of the Year Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for the San Antonio District. This accolade was granted amidst a competitive selection process that spanned across 55 counties, emphasizing the company's notable contributions to the technology and business landscape.

The award reflects La Luce Cristallina's impressive advancements in developing high-performance materials, particularly barium titanate (BaTiO₃), crucial for silicon photonics applications. As the demand for efficient optical interconnects continues to rise—driven by sectors like artificial intelligence infrastructure and cloud computing—the company’s innovative solutions are more relevant than ever.

Among its recent accomplishments, La Luce Cristallina inaugurated a cutting-edge fabrication facility in Austin, Texas. This state-of-the-art facility is pivotal in showcasing the company's flagship product: a 200-mm BaTiO₃ wafer now available in beta testing. This wafer aims to serve various sectors, including telecommunications, data communications, and quantum computing, enhancing the performance and efficiency of optical systems.

In addition to its innovative product offerings, the company introduced a CMOS-compatible oxide pseudo-substrate, further cementing its status as a forward-thinking manufacturer. Recently, La Luce Cristallina showcased its extensive solutions portfolio at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference, engaging with potential customers and partners within the optical ecosystem.

The Texas State University Small Business Development Center played a supporting role in the company's journey, facilitating a $3.3 million SBA 7(a) loan. This funding allowed La Luce Cristallina to acquire specialized equipment, ramp up manufacturing capabilities, and expedite product development. This support significantly contributed to the commercial viability of its electro-optic modulator platform, which is essential for creating high-density optical networks.

In a statement regarding the award, CEO Alex Demkov expressed that this recognition motivates the team to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in silicon photonics. He emphasized that the BaTiO₃-based solutions offered by La Luce Cristallina not only promise lower power consumption compared to traditional silicon photonics modulators, but also address persistent integration challenges and other limitations faced in the industry.

Underlining the local roots of its operations, Demkov noted, "The SBA's funding has been vital to our progress, allowing us to manufacture wafer-based solutions that cater to the demands for high-speed optical interconnects in an AI-driven technological environment right from our Texas base."

The official award presentation is scheduled for May 7, 2026, during National Small Business Week at the Norris Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. This event will celebrate not only La Luce Cristallina’s success but also the broader impact of small businesses on the economy.
