Overlord Labs Closes $10 Million Seed Financing
In a significant development for the tech industry, Overlord Labs, Inc., a San Jose-based fabless semiconductor firm, has closed an oversubscribed Seed financing round, bringing its total funding to $10 million. This includes $7.25 million in Seed financing and additional non-dilutive strategic development funding. The funds will be instrumental in progressing their innovative battery intelligence infrastructure, specifically designed for compute-intensive, battery-powered devices.
Transition to Product Validation
This financing comes at a pivotal moment as Overlord Labs transitions from the tape-out stage to product validation. They have successfully developed their flagship product, the GENESIS™ Battery Intelligence IC, utilizing the proprietary Silicon × Algorithm Architecture. Currently, the company is progressing through customer sampling and validation phases, preparing to meet the growing market demands.
The latest round, valued at $4.35 million, was led by Band of Angels with support from various investors including Foothill Ventures and Unlock Pacific Ventures. Returning angel investors also increased their stakes in this extension round, highlighting confidence in Overlord Labs’ potential.
Meeting New Demands of Computing
As the industry shifts towards edge computing, battery-powered devices are imposing unprecedented requirements on efficiency, safety, and runtime. Overlord Labs addresses these emerging challenges through its innovative approach to battery management. Traditional fixed-function battery management solutions are inadequate for modern intelligent devices, making Overlord’s approach more relevant than ever.
The GENESIS™ device is engineered to cater to single-cell battery systems and supports evolving battery chemistries such as silicon-anode cells. Initial applications for this groundbreaking technology include smart glasses, wearables, and hearables, where the need for performance is crucial yet constrained by physical dimensions and battery limitations.
Strategic Use of Capital
The raised capital will significantly aid Overlord Labs in various areas including:
- - Validation and Qualification: Completing the necessary tests to ensure the product meets industry standards.
- - Customer Sampling: Engaging with Tier-1 OEMs to demonstrate the capabilities of the GENESIS™ platform.
- - Firmware Expansion: Enhancing their algorithms for better performance and adaptability.
- - Production Infrastructure: Building the necessary facilities and systems to scale production effectively, targeting volume manufacturing by early 2027.
Richard Nicholson, Co-Founder and CEO of Overlord Labs, commented, "We started Overlord Labs because battery management architectures were not keeping pace with evolving devices. With working silicon and investor enthusiasm, we now have the resources to push GENESIS™ towards production."
Carlos Rodriguez, Co-Founder and COO, emphasized that GENESIS™ is designed to dismantle the historical performance, form factor, and battery life trade-off faced by hardware OEMs. The innovative product enables teams to scale without compromise, showcasing Overlord Labs' role in paving the path for the future of battery-driven technologies.
