LG Unveils Next-Gen Satellite Connected Car Solution at 5GAA Conference 2025

LG Unveils a Cutting-Edge Satellite Solution for Connected Vehicles at the 2025 5GAA Conference

At the recent 2025 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) Conference held in Paris, LG Electronics, known for its innovative technology in the mobility sector, demonstrated its latest advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) - Non-Terrestrial Networks (IoT-NTN). The event took place from May 12 to 15 and featured a live demonstration of a vehicle equipped with advanced telematics control units (TCU), showcasing seamless communication capabilities between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

A Groundbreaking Live Demonstration

During the event, LG showcased a vehicle that engaged in real-time voice communication while moving through the streets of Paris. The live demo highlighted the vehicle’s ability to switch from traditional terrestrial network communication to satellite-based communication without interruption, an impressive feat that marks a new era of connectivity in automotive technology.

The IoT-NTN system is designed to facilitate satellite communication in areas where traditional network services, like 3G, 4G, and 5G, are unavailable. This technology can play a vital role in applications such as autonomous driving, vehicle tracking, remote control systems, and emergency communications. It proves especially effective in remote locations like deserts, oceans, and mountain regions, or during disasters when terrestrial infrastructure might be compromised.

Enhancing Emergency Communications

One of the key innovations presented by LG is the integration of AI-driven voice compression technology within its IoT-NTN system. This advance dramatically reduces the data size of voice messages, which previously limited satellite communications to brief text-based alerts. It empowers the system to handle voice transmissions significantly faster, achieving speeds over ten times higher than traditional methods. By enabling true two-way conversations, drivers can engage in meaningful communication during critical situations.

In the event of an emergency, occupants can press a single button to send a vocal distress signal, articulating their needs without needing to text or perform complex actions. This feature dramatically enhances situational awareness and promotes driver safety.

A Vision for Future Mobility

During the conference, LG set up NTN and TN zones and conducted a live demonstration on real roads. Attendees experienced the system firsthand by sending and receiving voice messages across different network environments, proving the effectiveness of the seamless transition between network types. To support these operations, LG has developed a cloud-based service platform that expands the satellite communication capabilities of vehicles, integrating them with terrestrial networks for a superior user experience.

As one of the leaders in connected technologies crucial for transitioning to software-defined vehicles, LG continues to excel in areas like telematics, V2X communication, and in-vehicle infotainment systems. According to internal estimates based on data from Strategy Analytics, LG held a remarkable 24.4% market share in the telematics sector last year, reinforcing its dominance.

LG has been an active member of the 5GAA since its inception in 2016. This global consortium was formed to explore and promote future mobility solutions tied to 5G technology, comprising over 110 companies, including leading automakers, automotive suppliers, telecommunications operators, and chip manufacturers.

Our IoT-NTN technology marks a significant leap towards seamless and reliable connectivity for vehicles in the most remote and challenging environments,” said Lee Sang-yong, Head of the VS RD Lab at LG Vehicle Solutions. “By enabling real-time voice communication via satellite, we not only enhance driver safety but also lay the groundwork for the next generation of connected mobility solutions.”
