Team Novo Nordisk Returns to Milan-Sanremo in 2026
Team Novo Nordisk, renowned as the world’s first professional cycling team composed entirely of athletes with diabetes, is gearing up for a monumental return to the iconic Milan-Sanremo in March 2026. This event, often regarded as 'La Classicissima', is celebrated as one of cycling's most prestigious races, originally established in 1907.
As confirmed by the management, the American team has been awarded one of the four wildcards to participate in the 117th edition of this historic race. The 2026 route will take competitors on a scenic journey, starting in Pavia, just outside Milan, and continuing for over 300 kilometers toward the stunning Ligurian coast. As the race reaches its climax, cyclists will face the challenging climbs of the famous 'Tre Capi', including the Cipressa and Poggio, leading into the final sprint on Via Roma in downtown Sanremo.
Vassili Davidenko, the General Manager of Team Novo Nordisk, expressed his excitement about returning to the race: "We are extremely proud to be participating in Milan-Sanremo this year. It is one of the oldest and most iconic races in the world. This will be our seventh appearance, and it represents a significant opportunity for our team to make an impact and share our inspiring message."
The partnership between Team Novo Nordisk and its sponsor, Novo Nordisk, is founded on a commitment to challenge the misconceptions surrounding diabetes, promoting the idea that the condition should not hinder one’s dreams or athletic ambitions. Davidenko highlighted the team's mission: "Our participation in this race is not just about the competition but about encouraging and empowering those affected by diabetes. Racing from the front allows us to share this mission effectively."
In 2021, during their last race at Milan-Sanremo, Team Novo Nordisk's riders Andrea Peron and Charles Planet made a notable breakaway, showcasing their skills and determination. This year, the team has witnessed continued growth, with new athletes like Filippo and Antonio coming through the ranks, ready to represent their home monument.
Milan-Sanremo is characterized by its unpredictability in the final 50 kilometers, where the terrain shifts from relatively flat segments to a series of steep climbs. The climactic Poggio hill, located mere kilometers from the finish line, often serves as the stage for climactic attacks, setting the stage for thrilling finishes. This unique aspect of the race means that it can be won by various types of racers, be they sprinters, puncheurs, or all-rounders, depending on how the day unfolds.
As Team Novo Nordisk prepares for this challenging race, they are not just focused on the competition, but on the broader goal of raising awareness about diabetes. They aim to educate and inspire individuals affected by the condition, proving that with determination and the right support, anyone can achieve their dreams.
Through their participation, Team Novo Nordisk hopes to bring a spotlight to diabetes awareness, demonstrating resilience and highlighting the important message that diabetes should not define an individual’s capabilities. As they look towards March 2026, the team is set not only to race but to inspire thousands, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship and advocacy in the world of cycling.
