Women's Lacrosse League: A Historic First Season
The Women's Lacrosse League (WLL) has marked a significant milestone with the conclusion of its inaugural regular season, setting the stage for its first championship match. This groundbreaking event is set for August 15, where the California Palms will face off against the Maryland Charm at Subaru Park in Philadelphia. It will be broadcast live on ESPN and available for streaming through the ESPN App.
In just one season, the WLL has demonstrated remarkable growth and engagement, highlighting the increasing popularity of women’s sports. The league shattered attendance records in locations like Fairfield, Connecticut, and Boston, solidifying its presence and drawing fans from across the nation. Social media metrics reflect a massive 150 million impressions across the league and its teams’ platforms, illustrating the fervent interest from supporters.
The WLL embraced its fans not only through engaging online content but also with the introduction of sought-after merchandise. Among the league’s top-selling products are jerseys, particularly favored by fans of players like Charlotte North of the Boston Guard and Ally Mastroianni of the California Palms. In a stunning highlight of the season, a behind-the-back goal by Erin Coykendall garnered an astounding 23 million views, proving how captivating the league has become.
The competitive nature of the games has also been a significant talking point, with an average scoring margin of just 2.8 goals per game, ensuring that every match remains thrilling until the final whistle. The league has formed partnerships with prominent brands such as Cash App, Nike, Maybelline, Lexus, Gatorade, and U.S. Bank, showcasing its growing appeal and financial viability.
Paul Rabil, co-founder of the PLL and the WLL, shared his vision for the league, stating, "When we started the WLL, this is what we pictured: amazing talent on the field and a season that made people believe women's lacrosse belongs at the top of sports. Now we get to close it out the right way, by opening the gates to thousands of families and letting them see it for themselves."
The WLL was established in November 2024 and debuted with a special championship series featuring teams playing in the Olympic Sixes format. This initiative is part of a larger vision to bring women's lacrosse to the Olympics, starting at the LA28 games. The success of the Championship Series propelled the league into a full season with an exciting 10-on-10 format, first tested at the 2025 WLL All-Star Game.
Reflecting on this successful expansion, Mike Rabil, co-founder and CEO, expressed, "Expanding to a full season was a bet on our players and our fans, and this year proved that bet was right. Twenty-four partners committed to this league in year one, attendance records fell across our markets, and our audience on ESPN kept growing." This foundation is crucial as the league aims to establish a sustainable and growing presence in sports.
Saturday’s championship matchup promises to showcase some of the world's most elite women’s lacrosse players. The matchup is not just a battle for the title; it will feature several members of Team USA, who recently achieved gold at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women's Championship in Tokyo. Superstar Ally Kennedy, who was named MVP of the tournament, will represent Maryland, accompanied by fellow gold medalists including Sam Apuzzo and Brigid Duffy. The California Palms boast an equally impressive lineup with players like Marie McCool and Ally Mastroianni.
In an effort to make the championship accessible, WLL is collaborating with communities and state partners to provide tickets to those in need. Through an initiative supported by the Pennsylvania government, 2,500 complimentary tickets are being allocated to nonprofits, youth programs, and community groups, alongside a limited number of $10 tickets for local families. This initiative aims to expose more youth to the excitement of women’s lacrosse and help the league achieve a new record for attendance.
As the WLL heads into this historic championship weekend, fans and players alike are gearing up to celebrate a remarkable season while hoping for a successful future for women’s lacrosse. For more details and to get tickets, fans can visit
