APsystems Reaches Major Safety Milestone with APstorage 261L Passing UL 9540A Test

In a remarkable achievement, APsystems has announced the successful completion of the UL 9540A test for its energy storage solution, the APstorage 261L, marking a crucial milestone in the realm of fire safety for commercial and industrial operations. Conducted under the vigilant supervision of TÜV Rheinland, the APstorage 261L is a liquid-cooled energy storage device that has proven its exceptional fire safety capabilities during rigorous testing procedures.

The UL 9540A standard is widely recognized as one of the stringent safety benchmarks for energy storage systems globally. This test evaluates the thermal runaway behavior at various levels, including cell, module, unit, and entire installation, measuring parameters like heat release, smoke generation, temperature rise, and response systems to verify the ability to resist fire and explosion hazards.

During the testing phase, the APstorage 261L was subjected to extreme conditions, operating at 100% state of charge (SOC) with the fire suppression system intentionally disabled. Remarkably, even under these challenging circumstances, the device exhibited no short circuits, fire propagation, or explosions, maintaining its structural integrity throughout the testing period. The key findings demonstrated that the thermal flow was maintained at 0 kW/m² near the impacted unit, significantly below the UL 9540A threshold of 1.3 kW/m², thereby eliminating the risk of ignition to neighboring devices.

The maximum surface temperature recorded was a mere 83.9 °C on both the affected and adjacent modules, showcasing the effectiveness in preventing heat transfer between units. Additionally, the maximum temperature of the adjoining wall was only 30.6 °C, which is just 3.1 °C above ambient conditions, highlighting almost negligible thermal impact on the surrounding environment.

At every phase of the testing hierarchy, from cell to module to unit, thermal leakage remained confined within the unit, successfully averting any spread to adjacent storage units. APsystems has embedded safety into every design aspect of the APstorage 261L, featuring a liquid cooling architecture that maintains temperature variations within cells below 3 °C, thus prolonging battery life and enhancing operational safety.

This comprehensive safety architecture combines a four-level fire prevention system, active ventilation, and passive pressure relief mechanisms. Together, these features construct a robust, multi-layered safety framework that protects the system from the cell level to the entire installation.

Moreover, the APstorage 261L is designed for compactness and flexibility, supporting the rapid deployment of commercial and industrial operations in Europe. The system only occupies 1.3 m² and offers 'plug-and-play' connectivity options for simplified installation and commissioning. Its modular architecture allows for easy parallel expansion across multiple interfaces, making it an ideal solution for industrial operations, commercial buildings, and solar charging facilities.

With an extensive network in Europe and a specialized energy storage site tailored for commercial and industrial needs in the Netherlands, APsystems ensures local product availability, expert training, and reliable on-site technical support.

Continuing to expand its portfolio of comprehensive energy storage solutions, APsystems remains committed to enhancing safety, performance, and reliability in its offerings. For more information, you can visit their official website.
