Training for Support Workers of Severe Behavioral Disorders

In response to increasing societal needs, Eustyle College has launched its Training Program for Support Workers of Severe Behavioral Disorders, which aims to prepare professionals to support individuals with challenging behaviors stemming from severe disabilities and illnesses. The program, which started in December 2024, has graduated over 400 participants by September 2025.

Understanding Severe Behavioral Disorders

Severe behavioral disorders refer to conditions often observed in individuals with significant intellectual disabilities or autism. Some behaviors, such as self-injury, rigid thinking, disruptions in sleep, or eating non-food items, necessitate specialized support. According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan, an estimated 80,000 individuals require such assistance, underlining the urgent need for trained professionals in this field.

Eustyle Laboratory, the organization behind Eustyle College, focuses on providing substantial care services across Japan for individuals with severe disabilities, including intellectual and mental health challenges. With an emphasis on direct experiences from the field of heavy supportive care and group homes, the college's curriculum integrates this practical knowledge into its training.

The Training Program’s Impact

The Training Program for Support Workers of Severe Behavioral Disorders delivers practical and efficient training that can be completed online, allowing participants from across the nation to engage with the content flexibly. The course is designed to impart essential skills for dealing with severe behavioral issues faced by individuals, focusing on real-world applicability and responsiveness to the participants' needs.

A significant challenge faced in care settings is the difficulty in managing interactions effectively due to instances of staff abuse or aggressive behavior from users. Therefore, the training fosters the development of employees who can engage empathetically and appropriately, leading to improved daily living conditions for the individuals they support. Understanding unique disabilities and providing tailored responses have been shown to reduce incidents of severe behavioral problems.
