Connor Sports Hosts Educational Day on Sustainable Forestry for Over 500 Students
Connor Sports Hosts Educational Day on Sustainable Forestry
On October 5, 2026, Connor Sports® spearheaded a remarkable event aimed at educating K-12 students about sustainable forestry practices in Iron River, Michigan. In collaboration with the Forest Park School District, Iron Mountain School, and West Iron School, this educational initiative welcomed over 500 students to explore the intricate processes involved in responsible timber harvesting. This event is part of the production preparation for the Official Court designated for the 2027 NCAA® Men's Final Four®, affirming Connor Sports’ commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness.
The Natural Resources Educational Day took place at the picturesque Cooks Run forest, transforming the natural surroundings into an interactive learning environment. Students rotated through various educational stations, each designed to impart knowledge on key aspects of sustainable forestry. These included strategic timber selection, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and hands-on demonstrations of tree-felling techniques.
One of the most exciting moments was when Brock VanOss, a certified trainer from VanOss Forestry in Crystal Falls, Michigan, performed a live tree felling demonstration. The event successfully highlighted the critical safety measures and skills necessary for such an operation. Students not only gained insights into responsible forest management but also enjoyed the unique opportunity to witness the extraction of timber that will contribute to the construction of the NCAA Final Four court in Detroit.
"Sustainability has always been a core value at Connor Sports, and partnering with the Upper Peninsula timber industry allowed us to create a dynamic learning experience for these young students," said Benjamin Bachman, CEO of Gerflor North America, which oversees Connor Sports. His words underscored the event’s importance in providing students with knowledge about how sustainable practices can seamlessly integrate into modern athletics and industry.
Educational stations throughout the event covered various aspects of forestry, from tree cutting and selection to the use of sophisticated heavy machinery. Students learned about the impacts of sustainable forestry on wildlife, the conversion of logs into lumber, and the preparation of the court panels that will eventually feature in the Final Four competition.
Numerous local industry partners contributed to the success of the day. These included the United States Forest Service, LP Building Solutions, and the Natural Resource Conservation Partnership. Their presence emphasized the collaborative effort required for responsible forest management and the importance of community involvement in educational initiatives.
"The emphasis on sustainability in producing the Final Four court is of paramount importance to our organization, and we are grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate this to our future generations," remarked Dave Beachnau, CEO of the Detroit Local Organizing Committee. He highlights how significant environmental responsibility is for the overall event, connecting both on-court events and related activities.
