Vision To Learn Reaches a Major Milestone
This autumn, Vision To Learn proudly celebrates a significant accomplishment: the provision of glasses to 300,000 children in California. This event was marked with a special ceremony held at the 24th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, where distinguished individuals such as Vision To Learn Founder Austin Beutner, California Teachers Association President David Goldberg, and Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Andrés E. Chait came together to commemorate this achievement.
The initiative aims to ensure that every child in the Los Angeles Unified School District's Community Schools receives the essential eyewear they need to thrive. Austin Beutner expressed, "More than 4 million children nationwide attend school each day without the vision assistance they desperately need. Just as we provide meals for hungry children and ensure they have the necessary school supplies, we must guarantee that all children have access to glasses. Every student deserves the tools to succeed in their education and life."
Collaborating with local educational leaders, the team demonstrated the importance of focusing on basic needs to promote student well-being. David Goldberg echoed this sentiment, stating, "When students can clearly see their learning materials, they are far better poised to participate in their education. Vision To Learn exemplifies what can occur when we address students' needs directly in their schools. Our Community Schools reflect this mission, and we aspire to expand such initiatives throughout California."
Superintendent Andrés Chait also emphasized the role of community partners in supporting children's academic journey. "Every gesture of assistance—from providing glasses to essential health services—contributes to removing barriers that hinder a child's learning experience. We are thankful for partners like Vision To Learn, who help ensure that every child in our schools can thrive."
Vision To Learn addresses the stark disparity in children's access to eye care by providing mobile vision clinics managed by qualified eye care professionals that directly reach underserved communities. Independent research highlights the effectiveness of this program; a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found that children receiving glasses from Vision To Learn experienced the equivalent of two to four extra months of academic progress, with the most significant improvements noted among struggling and disabled learners.
During the milestone celebration, students and faculty from 24th Street Elementary actively participated, demonstrating their excitement at receiving their first pairs of glasses. Maria Miranda, United Teachers Los Angeles Elementary Vice President, expressed her firsthand witnessing of the transformative impact of Vision To Learn's initiatives, asserting that the collaboration is vital in ensuring every child in the district receives the eye care they need.
Beutner concluded by noting that the number of 300,000 is more than just a figure; it represents countless lives that have been positively impacted, ensuring that children can engage fully with their education. He reiterated the commitment to working alongside community schools to pinpoint and provide for children's essential needs, advocating for the continued support in making glasses accessible to all students in need.
Vision To Learn's mission began in 2012, dedicated to creating equitable access to quality eye care and services. Now, it stands as the leading provider of school-based eye care across the nation, having assisted over 4 million children with vision screenings and supplied glasses to 690,000, all at no cost to families.
