The Future Minerals Forum 2027: A Pivotal Event for Global Mining
In January 2027, Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, will host the sixth edition of the Future Minerals Forum (FMF). This crucial event, held under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, is set to take place from January 12 to 14, under the theme, "Global Collaboration for Resilient Mineral Supply." The FMF aims to foster international cooperation, focusing on strengthening mineral supply chains across the globe.
The FMF has gained significant traction since its inception. The previous edition, held in January 2026, saw participation from government representatives across 91 countries, along with over 64 governmental and non-governmental organizations, totaling around 21,500 attendees from 175 countries. At this gathering, an impressive 132 agreements worth more than $26.7 billion (100 billion SAR) were signed, contributing to a cumulative total of 398 agreements valued over $75.2 billion (282 billion SAR) across five editions.
Focus Areas for 2027
The upcoming forum will prioritize several key areas to stimulate mineral supply and enhance value chains both within Saudi Arabia and in emerging supply regions. The event will revolve around mobilizing financial resources, accelerating project development, and shortening timeframes to production. Notably, the event will highlight meetings led by government ministers, inviting collaboration from industry leaders, multilateral organizations, financial institutions, and academic experts.
One of the forum's key features will be the expanded "Gateway to Funding" activities, designed to connect investors with scalable projects. Moreover, the event will include "State-of-the-Sector" sessions—an extension of the Future Minerals Barometer—that will provide insights into resource forecasts and market trends.
Additionally, interactive roundtable discussions and knowledge-sharing meetings will facilitate the identification of solutions to bolster supply chains. The FMF seeks to transition discussions on the future of minerals from mere ambition to actionable partnerships and investment opportunities, while blending international capital, technology, and expertise with Saudi Arabia's mining sector.
Growth of the Mining Sector
The mineral exploration landscape in Saudi Arabia has changed dramatically due to the FMF's influence and the government's proactive approach. Exploration expenditures have increased significantly, skyrocketing from $54.7 million (205 million SAR) in 2020 to $362.7 million (1.36 billion SAR) by 2025. Concurrently, the number of active exploration companies surged from six to an impressive 191.
Recent announcements by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy and Industry, have revealed significant natural resource potential, including estimates of 114 million tons of ore rich in rare earth elements from the Jabal Sayid project in the Medina region. These developments underscore the FMF's role in promoting the goals of a comprehensive strategy for the mining and minerals industry in Saudi Arabia.
A Call to Action for Global Mineral Supply
The FMF 2027 is positioned as a global call to diversify mineral supply chains, enhance mining capacities, and build a more resilient mineral ecosystem. For those interested in participating in this landmark forum or seeking further information, visit
