Midea and IOM Collaborate to Empower Returning Migrants in Nigeria

Midea and IOM Launch a Transformative Academy in Abuja

In a significant step towards fostering resilience among returnees, Midea and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have collaboratively established the Midea Academy in Abuja, Nigeria. This vocational training initiative aims to equip returning migrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs) with essential skills and knowledge to navigate their reintegration into society.

Launched in January 2026, this academy emerges as a part of the strategic partnership announced in August 2025, focusing on the dual objective of skill development and infrastructural support. With many returning migrants facing a myriad of economic, emotional, and social challenges, this initiative signifies a holistic approach towards enabling sustainable reintegration into their communities.

Goals of the Midea Academy

The Midea Academy does not merely serve as a technical training hub; it aspires to be a transformative space where participants can rediscover their potential and reinstate their confidence. According to Anyanechi Ukamaka, the national program coordinator for IOM, migrants often confront a complex web of pressures upon their return. Recognizing this, the curriculum extends beyond vocational training to include mental health support, community acceptance initiatives, and long-term stability strategies.

Participants engage in a comprehensive two-week program, blending 30% technical education with 70% practical exercises. The training comprises technical skills in HVAC installation, which aligns with international standards acknowledged globally by the IOM. This procedural integrity guarantees that the skills imparted are relevant and competitive in the current job market.

Practical Experience and Success Stories

A pivotal moment in the training involved the installation of nine Midea UNICOOL air conditioning units at IOM's offices in Abuja. This hands-on project, humorously dubbed ”UNI for a Climate Cool Future,” underscores both the practical skills acquired and the confidence built among participants. Uwalaka Chidubem Cordelia, a participant, shared her journey, celebrating the milestone of successfully completing an installation task that initially seemed daunting. “The first time, I felt it was impossible for a woman to accomplish this, but learning the technicalities transformed my perspective completely,” she expressed, beaming with pride.

Broader Impact and Future Aspirations

The impact of this partnership transcends vocational skills; it lays down the groundwork for personal transformation and revitalized self-worth. As the program unfolds, hopes are high that it will enhance public understanding of vocational skills' significance and actively inspire more partners to contribute to this cause. Midea envisages a future where a multitude of organizations shows interest in aiding the training initiatives aimed at integrating returnees seamlessly into the societal fabric.

This collaboration, as Ukamaka aptly puts it, sees Midea not just as a corporate entity but as a partner in restoring dignity and paving new pathways for returnees to construct sustainable futures. As the Midea Academy continues its operation, the initiative stands poised not only to represent the best in skilled development but also as a beacon of hope for returning Nigerians wishing to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.

Through such partnerships that blend private sector initiatives with humanitarian efforts, the potential for societal transformation grows, fostering inclusive development for all involved. Together, Midea and IOM are forging a paradigm shift in how returning migrants are perceived and supported in Nigeria.
