IAMS™ Launches the First Virtual Dog Run Marathon with Strava
On Your Mark, Get Set, Bark!
The IAMS™ brand has recently unveiled an exciting initiative called the IAMS Dog Run Marathon, teaming up with Strava to create a virtual marathon specifically for dogs and their owners. This new concept is set to run throughout the month of September 2026, providing a fantastic opportunity for pet parents and their furry friends to engage in a month-long running challenge.
A Marathon for Our Furry Friends
The IAMS Dog Run Marathon isn't just any running event; it's a virtual 26.2-mile challenge designed to recognize the vital role that dogs play in the lives of active runners. Launched in collaboration with Olympic gold medalists Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall, along with their dogs, Milo and Winnie, this initiative aims to share the joy of running with our four-legged companions.
How It Works
U.S. residents can join the challenge via the Strava app by logging their daily walks and runs with their dogs from September 1 to September 30. This month-long event allows participants to track a total of 26.2 miles, but for safety reasons, there is a cap of 5 kilometers (about 3.1 miles) per day specifically to keep the dogs active yet safe during their exercise routines. This innovative format not only emphasizes dog safety but also fosters a strong bond between pets and their owners as they work toward a common goal.
Why the Timing is Perfect
Scheduled just ahead of some of the largest marathons in the country, the IAMS Dog Run Marathon is launched at the peak of marathon season. This timing not only capitalizes on the enthusiasm for running as a sport but also strengthens the partnership that IAMS and Strava established earlier this year through the introduction of a Pet Tag feature on the Strava app. This unique aspect enhances tracking capabilities for dog owners, helping them monitor their pets’ exercise regimens effectively.
The Human-Dog Partnership
As Tara and Hunter eloquently put it, "It's never just about the finish line. It's all the moments leading up to it, especially with our dogs supporting us every step of the way." The IAMS Dog Run Marathon is a celebration of those 'unsung heroes' that help runners achieve their goals every day.
Prizes for Participation
Besides simply logging miles, participants will have the chance to win exciting prizes! Upon joining the marathon via the Strava app, runners are eligible for a rebate on qualifying purchases of IAMS High Protein dog food. Classes of prizes have been established, with a grand prize that includes $10,000 for the training of the winning dog, 26 bags of IAMS High Protein Dog Food, a special medal, and the opportunity for their dog's image to feature on a running shirt alongside the Woodhalls.
In addition, a group of random finishers will win unique IAMS running gear and food, further incentivizing participation and fostering a community of active dog owners.
A Commitment to Pet Health
IAMS resonates with the notion that dogs represent more than just pets—they're partners in an active lifestyle. The IAMS Dog Run Marathon aims to uplift those dogs who are there for every mile of training. Mindy Barry, Chief Marketing Officer for Mars Pet Nutrition, has emphasized how this event supports not just the dogs’ physical health through exercise, but also their emotional and mental well-being.
The partnership between IAMS and Strava continues to inspire dog owners across the country to maintain active lifestyles, enhancing both their health and the health of their pets. With a selling point of high-quality dog nutrition, IAMS High Protein dog food is designed to support a dog’s energy and recovery with a focus on animal-sourced proteins.
