A Green Initiative: The "Forest Starbucks Project" Begins in Minakami Town
Starbucks Coffee Japan Co., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is thrilled to announce the launch of the "Forest Starbucks Project" in Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture. This initiative aims to utilize underused thinned timber in innovative ways while promoting environmental education and information sharing among the company's partners (employees) within the beautiful forests of Minakami. Since signing the collaboration agreement for sustainable forest management on April 2025, this project has evolved through partnerships, including collaboration with students from Gunma Prefectural Tone Technical High School.
Core Activities of the Project
The project revolves around several key activities that underscore sustainability and community engagement:
1.
Utilization of Thinned Timber: The primary focus is the proactive use of thinned timber that is often unsuitable for traditional wood product distribution. The project challenges the norm by conducting durability tests on these materials to foster new narratives in construction.
2.
Educational Engagement: A section of Minakami's forest has been leased to serve as a space for enhancing knowledge about the significance of forest management and sustainability, promoting a deeper understanding among participants.
3.
Coffee Grounds Composting: An experimental initiative is underway to create bio-nest compost using coffee grounds from local Starbucks stores combined with natural materials from the Minakami forest. This approach aims to develop sustainable compost production practices, integrating local resources effectively.
4.
Seedling Care Program: The project also includes a unique program for nurturing seedlings in 17 drive-thru locations across Gunma Prefecture, restoring them to the forest once they reach an appropriate growth stage.
By implementing these activities, the project aims to create a series of connections between Minakami's forests and Starbucks stores, sharing knowledge and developing community involvement.
Innovative Timber Utilization
The challenge in the forestry and timber distribution industry involves the disposal of small-sized logs that, although structurally sound, cannot be used as standard building materials. The "Forest Starbucks Project" seeks to transform these logs into valuable resources for construction. For instance, timber not suited for structural use can be repurposed as decorative interior materials, thereby expanding its application.
As a starting point, durability tests on these thinned timbers were launched. In collaboration with local forestry experts, five types of deck materials were created using two wood preservatives across three tree species: Japanese cedar, Konara oak, and chestnut. These materials are currently being tested under natural conditions to determine which combination offers the highest durability. The design ethos emphasizes a "no-waste" approach, utilizing the natural irregularities of wood while aiming to reduce waste rates significantly.
Environmental Education Initiatives
The project plans to facilitate hands-on experiences where employees can learn about forests and global environmental challenges. An essential consideration is the projected drop in suitable land for growing Arabica coffee beans, which could decline sharply due to climate change. Starbucks aims to provide a unique experience where participants can enjoy coffee surrounded by nature, fostering a connection with the ecosystem.
Bridging the Gap Between Forests and Stores
Moreover, the project extends its initiatives to connect the community and forest through sustainable practices. One notable initiative is the composting of used coffee grounds combined with local soil and materials to create high-quality compost, which will benefit local flora. Additionally, the Seedling Care Program will enable customers unfamiliar with forests to engage with nature and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for environmental conservation.
Starbucks remains committed to nurturing connections among individuals, communities, and the planet. The "Forest Starbucks Project" serves as a crucial step toward promoting sustainable forest management while encouraging a shared responsibility toward ecological conservation. The ongoing progress of this project will be shared through various media channels and community events, ensuring transparency and community involvement.
