Japanese Hotels Achieve International ESG Certification for Sustainability

Recognition of Sustainability in Japanese Hospitality

In a remarkable achievement, a total of ten hotels under the management of JR East Hotel Mets have secured the international ESG certification known as "Sakura Quality An ESG Practice". This accreditation, particularly noted for its focus on sustainable hospitality, was awarded to the hotels for meeting the "3 Gyoiko Sakura" standard, emphasizing sustainability and integration with local culture and history.

The hotels recognized include the six entities from the JR East Hotel Mets Premier brand located in Sapporo, Akihabara, Tokyo Bay Shin-Kiba, Gotanda, Yokohama Sakuragicho, and Makuhari Toyosuna; two hotels from Hotel Dreamgate Maihama (both main and annex); and two hotels named B4T situated in Akabane and Tabata.

Commitment to Sustainability

The certification process assesses hotels based on ESG practices, focusing on environmental efforts, social contributions, and governance. The criteria for obtaining the Sakura Quality label are informed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which endorses international standards for sustainable tourism. This program comprises 172 items aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring thorough evaluations through self-assessments and inspections by experts.

The initiative taken by JR East Hotels to integrate sustainability into their operations highlights their dedication to both the environment and the comfort of their guests. The hotels not only aim to provide exceptional service but also focus on creating spaces that encourage a connection with the local heritage and community.
