Empowering Local Youth Through Crowdfunding
In an inspiring move, 'Furusato Donation for Good', a crowdfunding platform managed by Borderless Japan, has partnered with Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture. This initiative aims to empower local high school and university students, alongside entrepreneurs, to tackle pressing community challenges through innovative projects. This initiative embodies a model of social entrepreneurship that seeks not only to solve local issues but also to foster a spirit of collaboration among the younger generation.
The Projects on Offer
The newly launched projects showcase a diverse spectrum of initiatives aiming to revitalize the community. Six teams comprising young people from the region are stepping up to make a difference:
1.
COLOR‘Z: This project focuses on transforming a disused school building into an exciting radio control car circuit, designed for families and enthusiasts to gather and engage.
2.
KOSEN Link: Aiming to innovate in elder care, this project plans to develop AI solutions to streamline operations within the industry, reducing the burden on workers while fostering local employment.
3.
Operation Conference Room: A creative endeavor by high school students who are renovating a vacant shopfront to establish a coworking space exclusively for students, encouraging collaboration and creativity.
4.
Samwon Industrial Japan: A specialized team aims to enhance disaster resilience in Yatsushiro by implementing cutting-edge waterproofing techniques to fortify public infrastructure against the elements.
5.
Haru Neko: A project dedicated to the health of felines, aiming to develop an innovative water drinking device that addresses hydration needs, significantly improving the longevity and health of cats.
6.
Y4Global: An entrepreneurial collaboration among four local businesses, focused on establishing a sustainable export model for Yatsushiro's unique products like matcha and igusa (rush grass), broadening their reach to international markets.
Each project reflects a response to various local challenges, such as the decline of shopping streets, out-migration of young residents, a shortage of nursing staff, and the increasing number of vacant facilities. The common thread among these young entrepreneurs is their determination to effect change in their community rather than waiting for others to do so.
Bridging Gaps Between Donors and Innovators
'Furusato Donation for Good' not only facilitates funding support for these community-driven projects but also bridges the gap between local innovators and potential donors who wish to contribute to meaningful causes. By leveraging the crowdfunding model endorsed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, donors have the option to select which projects they want to support, and in return, they are eligible for tax deductions along with receiving local produce as a token of appreciation.
The range of projects symbolizes a shift towards local solutions for local issues, highlighting the youth's proactive approach towards crafting their future. It is a fundamental change in mindset that suggests a shift from dependency on external support to self-reliance community building.
The Vision of Borderless Japan
Established in 2007, Borderless Japan has dedicated itself to resolving social issues through innovative business models, encompassing a wide array of fields such as poverty alleviation, education, and environmental sustainability. The 'Furusato Donation for Good' initiative is just one of their many efforts to create a pathway for social good in partnerships with local communities.
Ultimately, these youth-led initiatives signify a hopeful future for Yatsushiro, illustrating how communities can collaborate to overcome challenges. As this crowdfunding initiative progresses, it encourages continuous engagement from both local innovators and donors alike, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem for future generations.
