Embrace Better Posture: A Unique Event for Kids and Parents
On December 7, 2025, Rigaku Body Inc., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, held an engaging event titled "Posture Improvement Workshop for Parents and Kids." This initiative targeted not only children but also aimed to equip parents with the knowledge needed to instill long-lasting habits about correct posture at home. With a goal to transform the traditional approach of saying, "Sit up straight!" into a healthier and more effective communication, the workshop encouraged active participation and learning for both generations.
A Common Language for Posture: "Body as Rice Dumpling, Spine as Skewer"
Many parents find it challenging to directly convey the importance of good posture to their children, often resorting to vague phrases like, "Sit properly" or "Keep your back straight." To address this issue, the workshop introduced a memorable slogan: "Body as rice dumpling, spine as skewer." This approach created a visual metaphor that children could understand intuitively, helping them picture a straight skewer through a rice dumpling representing proper posture.
Visual Aids for Home Practice
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants received a poster featuring this slogan and a simple "posture check ruler" designed for smartphone use. This ruler allows parents to check their children's posture using photos, making it easy to integrate into daily life. The familiar imagery of food serves as a relatable way for parents and kids to interact about posture, promoting a consistent environment for healthy habits.
Engage with the Perspective of Parents: Product Developers Participate
In a unique twist, product developers from various companies were invited to participate alongside their children. This provided them the opportunity to experience the workshop from both a business and a parental perspective. Instead of merely observing from a distance, they engaged directly, getting to witness their child’s reaction to the program in real-time. The personal feedback from parents about how the program affected their child’s engagement yielded valuable insights that could guide the future direction of product development.
Insights from Surveys: Addressing Parental Vocabulary Loss
Pre-event surveys revealed that many parents struggled with the appropriate vocabulary to convey the significance of correct posture, often relying on outdated phrases. After the workshop, every participant reported that they had gained new insights into how to discuss posture at home more effectively. By sharing knowledge about why proper posture is essential and how to achieve it physically, families shifted from a one-sided instruction method to a positive dialogue about body alignment.
Addressing Common Concerns: Effectiveness of Posture Support Tools
During the event, a parent raised a practical question: "Do posture support items, like plush toys that clip onto desks, actually work?" Our answer was a resounding "Yes!" Such tools can be effective and encouraging in daily routines, but the child needs to first understand the correct pelvic and spine positions. That foundational knowledge is crucial in maximizing the effectiveness of these gadgets. Instruction that combines knowledge with tactile experience forms a solid base for better posture, leading to long-term improvement.
A Vision for the Future: Posture Care as Routine as Teeth Brushing
Rigaku Body envisions a future where recommending proper posture becomes as commonplace as parents reminding their children to eat or bathe. Just as brushing teeth evolves with new techniques and knowledge, we aim for posture care to similarly progress beyond old advice. We aspire to elevate posture education to the level of basic health education, ensuring a modern, scientifically grounded understanding of physical well-being is passed down through generations.
This event represents a small yet meaningful step toward achieving that goal. Rigaku Body is committed to continuing to support children's potential development through innovative programs aimed at health and wellness.
