Empowering the Future: Financial Literacy Programs for Children in Japan
MetLife Life Insurance Co., led by Chairman and CEO Dirk Osteen, is on a mission to empower children across Japan with the vital skills of financial literacy through its employee volunteer program, "Important Money Talks." This initiative has been launched at various locations including "Children’s Third Spaces," a national project initiated by the Nippon Foundation, aimed at providing a supportive environment for children to learn essential life skills.
In 2025, MetLife successfully conducted workshops for elementary school students in seven regions, such as Miyagi, Tokyo, Chiba, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka. Over 1,000 students have benefitted from financial education, which not only teaches them about money management but also encourages behavioral change and awareness about the importance of finances. The enthusiastic response from parents and educators highlights the program's effectiveness.
The background of this initiative stems from the pressing issues of educational disparity and lack of financial literacy among Japanese children, which can severely impact their future choices. Acknowledging that these challenges are societal issues, MetLife has been collaborating with the Nippon Foundation since 2021 to deliver hands-on financial workshops to children, utilizing original educational materials that engage young minds in meaningful discussions about money.
The program includes a variety of activities, such as workshops for elementary students, experiential insurance work opportunities for 146 children in Kobe, and financial education sessions for middle and high schoolers, engaging over 1,230 participants nationwide. The involvement of 56 employee volunteers further underscores MetLife's commitment to community engagement.
To further support this cause, MetLife has partnered with the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. This collaboration focuses on providing children worldwide with access to quality education and opportunities to participate in sports, thereby narrowing the education gap. As a key partner, MetLife is dedicated to helping children encounter diverse values and social issues, enabling them to soar into a brighter future.
