On September 3, 2026, APsystems announced a groundbreaking achievement in energy storage safety, having successfully passed the UL 9540A test for its APstorage 261L solution. This milestone highlights a significant advancement in the safety standards associated with energy storage systems used in commercial and industrial applications.
The UL 9540A standard is recognized globally as one of the most stringent safety benchmarks for energy storage systems. This test was focused on evaluating how well the system manages overheating incidents, effectively measuring heat release, smoke generation, temperature increase, and overall system response to fires and explosions.
Under the rigorous supervision of TÜV Rheinland, the APstorage 261L, which utilizes liquid cooling technology, excelled in these stress tests designed to simulate extreme operating conditions. During the assessment, the system functioned at full charge capacity while intentionally disabling its fire suppression system. Remarkably, no short circuits, fire spreads, or explosions occurred, maintaining structural integrity throughout the entire testing process.
Key testing outcomes revealed that the heat flow near the affected cabinet measured at 0 kW/m², significantly lower than the UL 9540A threshold of 1.3 kW/m². This result indicates that the risk of ignition to adjacent equipment due to thermal radiation was virtually non-existent. Additionally, the maximum surface temperature recorded on the modules was 83.9°C, demonstrating effective thermal propagation prevention between modules, with an adjacent wall temperature reaching only 30.6°C—barely above ambient temperature. Therefore, the design encapsulated overheating entirely within a single unit, successfully preventing any spread to neighboring cabinets.
The safety of the APstorage 261L is inherently integrated throughout its design, featuring a single-cluster liquid cooling architecture that ensures a temperature variation of no more than 3°C among cells, optimizing battery lifespan while enhancing operational safety. This design philosophy is reinforced by a comprehensive security architecture that employs a four-level fire protection system, active ventilation, and passive pressure relief mechanisms. Collectively, these elements establish a formidable multi-layer safety framework safeguarding the system from cell level to the entire installation.
Beyond its impressive safety performance, the APstorage 261L is tailored for swift and adaptable deployment across European commercial and industrial settings. With a footprint of merely 1.3 m², its plug-and-play connections facilitate simplified installation and commissioning processes. Furthermore, its modular design allows seamless parallel expansion across multiple cabinets, making it a preferred solution for industrial setups, commercial buildings, and solar storage charging applications.
