A Unique Expression of Culture and Craftsmanship in Whiskey
RD1 Spirits, a pioneering bourbon brand hailing from Kentucky, has recently unveiled a remarkable addition to its collection: the 2025 Limited Release “Sister Cities” Kentucky Straight Whiskey. This exceptional whiskey harmonizes the rich heritage of American spirits with the unique wood finishing techniques of Japan and France, showcasing a meaningful cultural connection through each sip.
A Toast to Sister Cities
The “Sister Cities” release pays homage to Lexington, Kentucky, which has established sister city relationships with Shinhidaka, Japan, and Deauville, France. These international bonds are thoughtfully represented in RD1’s innovative whiskey production. Master Distiller Jarrad Gollihue, PhD, articulated the brand's philosophy by stating that the whiskey is more than just a craft; it embodies cultural expression, bridging communities through shared appreciation for fine spirits.
The whiskey itself is a blend of classic Kentucky bourbon and rye. Initially maturing in new, charred American White Oak barrels, the whiskey then undergoes an intriguing transformation with the addition of French Oak “necklaces,” which extend the maturation period. This unique process enhances the whiskey’s character, allowing it to incorporate the subtleties of the wood from across the globe.
Flavor Profile and Craftsmanship
The Limited Release features a mash bill that includes a 5-year-old bourbon (70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley) and combines it with a 7-year-old bourbon (75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley) and an 8-year-old rye (51% rye, 37% corn, 12% malted barley). This careful selection of aged grains results in a whiskey that not only honors its roots but also welcomes international flavors. The final touch comes from the infusion of lightly toasted Japanese Mizunara staves, which add delicate notes reminiscent of sandalwood and incense.
The result is an aromatic experience featuring incense, citrus blossom, and subtle floral hints on the nose. On the palate, expect a dynamic interplay of sandalwood, rye spice, dark chocolate, and varieties of oak, culminating in a medium to long finish. The soft heat and lingering notes of Maraschino cherry make for a complex tasting experience that invites contemplation and enjoyment.

RD1's commitment to quality has been recognized; the “Sister Cities” expression achieved a gold medal and a remarkable score of 95 points at the 2025 New York International Spirits Competition.
