Kolmar Korea Expands Its K-Beauty Sunscreen Range for Scalp and Hair Protection

Kolmar Korea Expands Sunscreen Innovations for Scalp and Hair

Kolmar Korea, a leader in the K-Beauty sunscreen market, is taking significant steps to broaden its product offerings in the realm of sun protection specifically tailored for the scalp and hair. This expansion reflects a growing recognition that scalp care should be treated with the same diligence as skincare, particularly in light of the increasing trend of "skinification" among consumers.

With this initiative, Kolmar has introduced revolutionary products to combat UV rays targeting the scalp, notably the new "Scalp Sun Essence". This innovative product, with an SPF of 50+, is designed for direct application to the scalp, providing a practical solution where traditional sunscreens often fall short due to their oily formulations. The Scalp Sun Essence cleverly combines hydrophilic and lipophilic UV filters in an optimized ratio, resulting in a lightweight texture that is easy to apply.

Future Product Formats

In an effort to further diversify its offerings, Kolmar plans to roll out new formats such as mists and sprays, alongside specialized cleansers aimed at shielding the scalp from sun exposure. The company has set its sights on launching these products domestically in Korea within the year, followed by a global rollout, including the United States market, starting next year.

In addition to scalp products, Kolmar Korea is also delving into hair protection with a unique “photo-protective composition.” This innovative formula offers essential protection against damage caused by sun exposure, including harmful UV rays, as continuous exposure can lead to hair discoloration and damage, rendering hair dry and brittle.

Most conventional hair products often focus solely on heat protection while neglecting the sunlight risks. To address this gap, Kolmar has developed advanced technology utilizing high molecular weight siloxane oils with a high refractive index, efficiently dispersing light and minimizing the need for stabilizers, thus maintaining a lightweight feel. This formulation can seamlessly integrate into a wide range of products while incorporating active ingredients like biotin, panthenol, and niacinamide that not only protect against hair loss but also soothe the scalp and regulate sebum production.

Objective Assessment of UV Protection for Hair

Kolmar Korea has also pioneered a new method for the objective evaluation of UV protection efficacy for hair. Previously, no standardized method existed to measure how well products protected hair against UV damage. To address this, the company has created a methodology that analyzes color variations in hair samples before and after UV exposure, effectively assessing the level of damage and gauging UV protection efficacy. This groundbreaking study was published last year in the international journal of dermatology, _Skin Research and Technology_, receiving acclaim for its scientific contribution.

As the global sunscreen market becomes increasingly segmented, the demand for solutions protecting the scalp and hair is experiencing rapid growth. A spokesperson from Kolmar Korea stated, "Leveraging our extensive R&D capabilities, from product development and material innovation to effectiveness assessment, we aim to lead the market for next-generation hair sunscreens."

Representing over 70% of the sunscreen market share in Korea, Kolmar Korea has established itself as a pivotal player in the global success of K-Beauty sunscreens. In 2013, the company became the first Korean cosmetics firm to obtain FDA OTC certification in the United States. More recently, in 2022, they enhanced their R&D capabilities by founding Korea's inaugural UV protection facility— the "UV Tech Innovation Lab". The sunscreens developed in partnership with major international K-Beauty brands such as Beauty of Joseon, SKIN 1004, and Round Lab have collectively surpassed 100 million units sold worldwide.

With these advancements, Kolmar Korea not only solidifies its leadership in the K-Beauty market but also emphasizes the importance of scalp and hair health in the skincare conversation, promising vibrant, healthy hair free from the dangers of sun damage.
