Moldova Celebrates Record-Breaking Achievement with Largest Grape Vine Human Image

The Republic of Moldova has added another remarkable feat to its rich cultural tapestry by achieving a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title on October 3, 2026. This was accomplished when 493 participants came together to form the world’s largest human grapevine during the 25th edition of National Wine Day. The event took place in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau, where GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ adjudicator Pravin Patel was present to confirm the record.

The human grapevine stretched approximately 39 meters and was designed to symbolize the country’s deep-rooted winemaking traditions, which are critical to its national identity. Participants were designated to different positions to accurately depict the essential elements of a grapevine, including the roots, trunk, branches, six grape clusters, six leaves, and vine tendrils. To enhance visibility from the air, participants wore clothes in varied colors that represented different sections of the vine.

The formation required meticulous planning with about 493 individuals pre-registered to ensure accuracy in positioning. The organizers implemented stringent controls during the event, utilizing QR-code scanning to track the entries and verify that each participant was counted only once. According to the regulations imposed by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™, each participant remained in formation for 15 minutes while the adjudicator assessed compliance with over 30 technical criteria, including the layout of the formation and the quality of photographic evidence.

Stefan Iamandi, Director of the National Office for Vine and Wine, expressed his enthusiasm for the record achievement, stating, "This is undoubtedly the most beautiful gift for the 25th edition of National Wine Day; it visually exemplifies this year's theme, 'United by Wine.'" The annual event exceeded expectations this year, welcoming 114 wineries and selling 14,000 tasting booklets, marking an increase of around 50% compared to previous years. The celebration saw participants and visitors converging from over 70 countries, showcasing Moldova as a premier wine destination.

National Wine Day is celebrated in Moldova as the largest annual festival dedicated to the wines of the country, under the umbrella of the national wine brand, 'Wine of Moldova. Unexpectedly Great.' This year’s event not only served as a testament to the nation’s wine culture but also provided an opportunity for locals and tourists to engage in rich tasting experiences and traditional celebrations.

With its successful record attempt and the overarching message of unity among wine lovers, Moldova continues to reinforce its global reputation as a wine-producing country. Plans are already in motion for the next installment of National Wine Day, scheduled for October 2-3, 2027, offering yet another chance to celebrate and honor the country's vibrant winemaking community and its diverse offerings.
