Tech Mahindra's Chess League and AWS Team Up for Innovative Broadcasting in India
Revolutionizing Chess Broadcasting: GCL Partners with AWS
The Global Chess League (GCL), a collaborative initiative by Tech Mahindra and FIDE, is set to transform the chess viewing experience through an innovative partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This collaboration aims to create a state-of-the-art broadcasting format for Season 3 of the GCL, scheduled to take place in Mumbai from December 13 to 24, 2025.
With the adoption of AWS cloud technologies, GCL promises to enhance how fans experience chess matches. The integration of AWS services will provide viewers with real-time game updates, comprehensive live commentary, and detailed analyses powered by artificial intelligence. Fans globally will enjoy enriched broadcasts that feature multilingual coverage and interactive fan zones, aimed at delivering a personalized viewing experience.
As the league embraces modernization, it positions itself to connect global chess enthusiasts with the sport in ways that were previously unimaginable. Peeyush Dubey, the Chairperson of the GCL, stresses that the essence of chess—foresight, precision, and timing—aligns perfectly with their operations. This collaboration, according to Dubey, will establish a pioneering standard for blending sports and technology seamlessly.
Advancements in Broadcasting Technology
The technological leap forward for GCL will utilize a range of AWS offerings, including AWS Elemental MediaLive for live video encoding, Amazon SageMaker for AI-powered analytics, and Amazon CloudFront for robust content delivery. This infrastructure will ensure reliable, secure, and low-latency video transport and enable real-time processing of streams. Ultimately, the shift to cloud-based broadcasting signifies a departure from traditional infrastructures, allowing for scalability and global reach.
Praveen Sridhar, Head of Partner Business at AWS India and South Asia, highlights how this partnership symbolizes a blend of traditional chess and cutting-edge technology. He noted that through the smarter, more connected broadcast experiences enabled by AWS, fans would find themselves closer to the action than ever before.
A New Era for Chess
As the first official franchise chess league to introduce a mixed team format—allowing male and female players to compete together—GCL's mission extends beyond just entertainment. The league aims to foster inclusivity and accessibility within the sport. In this spirit, Season 3 will introduce enhanced formats, inclusive storytelling in multiple languages, and innovative fan engagement programs.
