Angela Kurkian Takes the Helm as New CEO of Professional Photographers of America

A New Era for Professional Photographers of America

Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the most long-standing nonprofit organization dedicated to photography, has made headlines with the appointment of Angela Kurkian, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Kurkian's vision is set to usher in a transformative period for PPA, leveraging her extensive experience to further the organization’s mission.

With over ten years at PPA, Kurkian is no stranger to the organization. Previously, she held the roles of Director of Education and Deputy CEO, working closely with the retiring David Trust, who served PPA for nearly three decades. Under Trust's leadership, PPA has seen significant growth, evolving from a traditional trade group into a multifaceted service provider for photographers.

Angela Kurkian’s journey began as a professional photographer after she discovered her passion during her studies at the University of Florida. In 1994, she founded Essenza Studio, focusing on wedding and portrait photography. Joining PPA shortly after led her to progressively take on more responsibilities, shaping the educational content offered to members. Kurkian's understanding of the industry equips her with the unique insight needed to navigate challenges facing photographers today, especially as artificial intelligence begins to influence the creative sectors.

As she takes the reins, Kurkian anticipates focusing on a progressive agenda aimed at enhancing professional standards, particularly through certification programs that will set a benchmark in the industry. She emphasizes delivering heightened visibility of PPA's education and skills hub, positioning it as a crucial resource amidst today's competitive landscape. Kurkian is committed to ensuring that PPA continues to advocate for its members, offering both legal and business support.

Kurkian expresses a deep commitment to the organization’s legacy, highlighting its pivotal role in the professional photography community over the last 150 years. In her words, “We were founded to provide photographers with resources and creative protection. I want our members to capitalize on the rich community that allows them to learn, share, and grow in this evolving photography landscape.”

The shift toward digital and AI-driven tools has altered how creative industries operate. Recognizing this transformation, Kurkian intends to implement new strategies that will help members adapt their business models to fit the current climate, ensuring that photographers can thrive, regardless of technological advances. She expresses her enthusiasm for leading PPA into its next chapter, stating, “I am honored and energized to shift into a new era for PPA and the critical role photography plays in storytelling.”

As Kurkian embarks on this journey, support from the PPA membership community will be critical. She believes that harnessing the collective wisdom and creativity of PPA's members will fuel organizational growth and innovation. Her commitment to education and member support illustrates a robust dedication to maintaining PPA's role as a thriving community for professional photographers.

Trust, who has been with PPA as its Director of Marketing since 1998 and has served as CEO since 1999, has expressed confidence in Kurkian's leadership. He remarked on her natural abilities, noting, “Her skills and leadership will enable PPA to not only continue to flourish but also reach new heights.” He also highlighted Kurkian’s role in launching PhotoVision, a pioneering platform that provides photographers with extensive resources to enhance both their creative and business capabilities.

As PPA approaches its next phase, Angela Kurkian’s leadership is set to redefine the association's aim and broaden its impact across an ever-evolving industry. For more on PPA and its future initiatives, visit PPA.com.
