SKF Advances Sustainability Goals with New Decarbonized Factories
In a remarkable move towards sustainability, SKF has officially announced that six of its factories around the world have attained decarbonized status. This advancement marks a pivotal moment in the company's efforts to achieve completely decarbonized operations by the year 2030. The facilities newly recognized for their decarbonization include locations in
Nilai, Malaysia,
Puebla, Mexico,
Haridwar and Pune, India,
Massa, Italy, and
Ladson, USA.
To qualify as decarbonized, these factories had to meet strict criteria that required a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 95% when measured against a baseline established in 2019. Additionally, each factory must demonstrate a solid strategy for addressing any remaining greenhouse gas emissions and continuously improve energy performance. This rigorous process underscores SKF's commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a benchmark for sustainability practices in the manufacturing sector.
“Achieving decarbonization at six more SKF factories represents a significant milestone in our journey towards net-zero operations,” said
Sofie Runius Cederberg, Head of Sustainability at SKF. “By minimizing the carbon footprint of our products, we are enabling our clients to create more sustainable solutions while supporting society's transition towards a greener future.”
Key developments at these newly certified factories include a comprehensive transition to renewable energy sources and an effective phasing out of heating systems powered by fossil fuels. SKF has also made substantial investments in energy-efficient technologies, such as heat pumps and advanced chillers. Impressively, the documented and verified energy savings from these upgrades have continued even during peak production periods, demonstrating the effectiveness of SKF's sustainability efforts.
In light of the ongoing challenges posed by climate change,
Susanne Larsson, the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the significance of these achievements. She stated, “Climate change is an enormous challenge that we all face, and our success in decarbonizing these factories reflects our unwavering commitment to climate action and operational excellence. By investing in renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and embracing innovative solutions, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also reinforcing our own resilience.”
These six newly decarbonized factories join previously recognized sites in
Steyr, Austria,
Tudela, Spain, and
Gothenburg, Sweden. Collectively, these nine decarbonized factories contribute to the reduction of nearly
20% of SKF's baseline manufacturing emissions.
SKF's climate targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming that their pathways to decarbonization align with the latest climate science.
This success illuminates SKF's determination to meet its SBTi-approved goal for decarbonized operations by the deadline of 2030. It serves as an inspiration not only within the industry but also for global efforts to confront climate change decisively.
